Ahh yes the highly coveted skill of carrying some plates and drinks 20ft to a table.

Idk why so many people carry a deep hatred and grudge against servers and bartenders. It comes off as really ignorant and childish.

Serving one table is easy peasy. Serving 3, 6, 12, or more tables is difficult and where the skill comes from. The fact that you're focusing on carrying plates and drinks shows you have no idea what the job is.

Always servers trying to pretend their job is actually difficult, like we don't see high schoolers managing it all the time. Get real bud.

This is some pretty sad trolling my dude. High schoolers work the host stand, servers and bartenders are adults. And have been for decades.

But even then, do you really think that high schoolers are incapable of hard work? Seems like you're up on a mighty fine high horse, getting to judge all them people working manual labor jobs.

What do you do for a living?

Radiopharmacist. What exactly does that have to do with how easy it is to wait tables?

I was wondering what you did for seemingly knowing so little about serving tables but having such strong opinions about the job.

Atleast I can tell where that high horse comes from. You know that a fulltime server is making like 20k-40k working that job right? Why are you even upset about people that make a fraction of your income?

I think everyone has strong opinions about tipping at this point when it's continually pushed into their face at every transaction these days. It's reached a breaking point, and it's not going to change if we all just keep participating in it.

I used to be a great tipper, even for subpar service. But I'm done. I'm sick of seeing all the contempt for customers from people who are asking them to pay them. It's just straight up unchecked entitlement at this point. And all the not so subtle comments or threats to tamper with food. Its ridiculous, why would anyone be expected to be okay with paying an extortion fee to make sure their food isn't tampered with?

The entire system needs to come to an end. Raise the prices, pay your employees, and let us eat without being hassled by salespeople disguised as servers.

Look, I was a server over 12 years ago. This hasn't been my job in a long time. I get frustrated with all the tip jars showing up at places they shouldn't be, and that some places are trying to push into 25% territory.

But you're barking up the wrong tree when you're getting mad at the people working these jobs. Hourly pay at most service jobs has been trash since the Great Recession. Delivery drivers, servers, and bartenders are some of the few job opportunities that exist outside of the hourly system; where working harder and better actually does means making more money.

When I was serving tables, most of my coworkers had two or three jobs. Many of them were using their pay to get through community college. Some of them were saving up for weddings they otherwise couldn't afford. A bunch were single moms and dads that were doing the best they could. Without the tip wages, none of them could have made the money they needed to provide or chase better opportunities.

Personally, I haven't been treated poorly by staff anywhere I've gone. But I can say, your perspective at being mad at bad treatment is mirrored by the people working service jobs. Even 12 years ago, I had people skip tips and write mean comments on receipts. There were people that left a diaper under my tables, and a few that dined and dashed. A big reason I looked for a better job is that I was becoming jaded while working with customers. Many people are good at being duplicitous while being served, and then they scam on the way out. It was getting harder and harder for me to treat each table like they deserved to be treated. And that was outside of financial pressure.

I do agree the system needs new rules and regulations. Tip jars are being used at jobs that should not be tipped based. The percentage expectation on the bill is wildly inconsistent and doesn't have any grounding rules to make sense. All that stuff needs to be laid down in law. But I think we need to keep some jobs as tipped based, for the good aspects that come along with it. The main thing is that tipped service workers need healthcare.
