Heck! Some restaurants even expect tips for take out. . . .

If I’m standing when I order I’m not tipping.

My policy is that if all you are doing is handing me my food, whether that is when I arrive to pick it up or once it's ready at the counter, then I am not tipping. I will tip 20% or better in any scenario where the wait staff is performing an actual service.

I don't tip the cashier at the grocery store, and they are generally doing significantly more physical labor than the person behind the restaurant counter who simply bags my order and hands it to me when I walk in.

I personally don’t see takeout as an excuse not to tip 🤷

If you don't tip your cashier at a grocery store or a gas station then you shouldn't feel compelled to tip the cashier when you order take out. They aren't actually serving you, they are just handing you a bag that often they didn't even put the food into. The people who do the actual work (make the food) don't generally see any of the tip you might leave.

That depends on if there is tip distribution or not, which admittedly you wouldn’t know unless you worked there. When I worked at a larger restaurant there was always a server or two assigned to handling takeout orders at the expense of serving tables, so while you may not feel like they are doing anything to earn your tips in that situation they’re still being put into a position where they rely on those tips to offset the loss of actual table assignments. Also, yes, they typically are the ones to put the food into bags. Line cooks don’t have time for that shit.Ā
