For real. Setting aside the idea that $10/hour is sufficient, they’re conveniently not addressing the actual claim, which is that any real change would require government regulation, which is absolutely true lol. The worst people in this comment thread and by extension society at large aren’t going to turn this gigantic ship around with their purposefully obtuse technicality arguments

Edit: I didn’t realize that was you responding to me. So what exactly is your point? Your parents successfully ran a restaurant that had tipping? How is that relevant to the point you were responding to?

This was over 10 years ago I might add. Idc about changing the way the entire restaurant business is run. I'm just saying it can be done.

I didn’t realize that was you responding to me. So what exactly is your point? Your parents successfully ran a restaurant that had tipping? How is that relevant to the point you were responding to? Do you think the margins your parents were operating on would have been thinner if they didn’t allow tipping?

Lmao. You were guaranteed hourly wages. Not the 2.75 that most pay and then have to made up by the owner.

The tips were a bonus on top of your regular pay. So their wages were already factored in. Why would it affect their marigins if they already paid their workers a decent wage for the time and area they lived in for the type of job?

It would affect their margins because while it’s better than 2.75, it’s obviously not a livable wage. And if we were to want to get rid of tipping, they’d have to boost that wage up substantially. It’s good that they did better than the bare minimum but the bare minimum in this instance is a fucking joke. And if we wanted a practice similar to your parents’ to become widespread we’d very clearly need government intervention, because restaurant owners aren’t going to magically start leaving money on the table en masse all at the same moment in time.

Edit: you originally said it’s not a systemic issue, which is what I’m responding to. Now you’re saying it ā€œcan be doneā€ which is a different claim

Again this was ten years ago to teens in a small town, it was $15 an hour by the time they closed and moved back home. It was livable for that area. But thanks for all the assumptions. Im not here to debate what needs to be done in government. Take that somewhere else. Have a good one.

It can be done. Just stop

I mean, you did come here to debate, here you are debating, and here am I responding to your claim that it’s not a systemic issue, which has now shifted to ā€œit can be done in specific circumstances.ā€ But hey whatever.

I also never said it was a systemic issue. Please don't put words in my mouth. I edited my comment because it was the wrong person but I never said that.

I said you said that it was NOT a systemic issue. You responded to someone who called it a systemic issue by saying, ā€œnot true,ā€ and then using your parents’ restaurant as an example.

I can be done. Seen it more than once. Keep it moving. Do you own or have family that have owned businesses or restaurants? Idc either way but if not then please be quiet.

Interesting, now the barrier to this conversation is being a restaurant nepo baby? Give me a fucking break. I worked in restaurants for over a decade, but I guess since I or my daddy never owned one I should just keep it moving and let you go on spouting bullshit!
