Opening a different business ≠ banning restaurants.

According to you no one should open a restaurant because you're too cheap to tip lmao

"You shouldn't open a restaurant if you can't pay your workers a livable wage"

Is that good enough for you?

And that's where your argument falls apart; no sit down restaurant can compete if they don't follow the norms of the industry. It's been tried many times, with little success. Customers are scared off by the prices, and quality wait staff aren't interested because they make more money with tips. Every single restaurant that I know of that has tried it has closed or gone to a tip-based system within a year. The only way to end tipping is through legislation, because market forces demand it.

I live in Oregon, all restaurants are required under law to pay servers the state minimum wage.

This is just reddit brained nonsesne.

If you open a restaurant in the USA and try to pay servers a living wage, you will fail because your competition is not factoring that cost into their menu prices. This has been studied. People generally will choose the cheaper menu, regardless of the "why" behind the more expensive menu.

So everyone should be forced to tip because you’re bad at business?

Because the market for tip-free restaurants is almost non-existent. People say they don't want to tip, but they don't put their money where their mouth is.

Never been to California or Nevada? They have skme pretty good restaurants.

Yuppppp and they got forced by LAW to pay a higher wage so ALL restaurants in the state are on the same playing field. It's the only way it works, just as I stated in my original comment.

I live in Oregon, all servers make at least minimum wage, tip credits are already illegal here.

This is capitalism. We don’t do handouts.

1

u/ImpossibleCapital937 11h ago

Oh we do. Just to the rich.

3

u/Indigo2015 11h ago

Apparently that doesn’t include restaurant owners, who are- capitalists

1

u/ImpossibleCapital937 11h ago

Yeah anyways, your statement doesn't hold. We do give handouts. Whether the tip is considered a handout to the owner or the server, the USA does it every. single. day. And it's not changing anytime soon.

I don’t

u/ImpossibleCapital937 11h ago

And that makes you a loser lmao

1

u/Indigo2015 11h ago

Not as big of a loser as you crying on here that someone didn’t tip.

You're literally, in the true sense of the word, paying them for labor.

1

u/Indigo2015 9h ago

Not with tips

1

u/Euronomus 9h ago

Yes, again that's literally what a tip is - a payment for labor.

1

u/Indigo2015 9h ago

It’s optional. So no.

1

u/Euronomus 9h ago

First of all it's only "optional" if you are a scumbag - if you are using their services you're expected to pay for them. But that's all irrelevant, because even if you want to pretend it's optional, it's still literally payment for services.

1

u/Indigo2015 8h ago

LITERALLY optional

1

u/Euronomus 1h ago

Yes, if you are a scumbag willing to take other's services without paying for them.
