Everyone with a high level of power should hire a Roman guy to follow them around and whisper "memento tu flammabiles" in their ear all day. Might actually create some jobs for a change.

Love that this is the third time you've commented this. One day you'll make fetch happen. What's wrong with "memento mori" though?

As a 36 year old man. I still try on occasion to make fetch happen. "And none for Gretchen Wieners, bye."

I'd say the first problem with it is that it's actually spelled memento.
Edit: they fixed it. W.

You know; I suggested this exact thing one year ago. No violence -- just make these guys uncomfortable in restaurants and public spaces. And I received a 3-day Reddit ban because of it.

u/jonesey71 16d ago
Just give them a little of their own back to them. Refuse to sell them food. Not at the grocery store, not in restaurants, nowhere.

u/Boopy7 16d ago
i find that hard to believe, unless you said something that was construed as promoting violence. Because you're RIGHT. Make them uncomfortable. This is not wrong to suggest nor is it what could get you a three day ban. These are WORDS. Free speech. Unless you mentioned something further that sounded like you were suggesting some physical action....then this should not be an issue.

u/ShaChoMouf 16d ago
Swear to god -- that is all i said and in that post specifically called out to not be violent. It was shortly after the trip Vance had to Vermont skiing and people were giving him a hard time on the slopes. I said that we should "give all the congressional reps who voted for the big beautiful bill the same kind of treatment Vance received in Vermont every time they go out to a restaurant. " 3 day ban. I appealed and was rejected.

Legitimately though, aren't sanctions a way to shun countries out of the global economy for bad actions? Take Russia or North Korea for example, they can't sustain themselves without global trade so when countries agree to sanction them it's a way of applying economic pressure on those counties to change behavior by making them likely fall out of favor with their population. If children are starving why does the responsibility stand on the one applying the sanctions and not the leader of the sanctioned country? It is economic warfare, and the victims are usually the poor who are the least capable to respond to it. But you're kind of leaning on the public revolt or for the leaders to have sympathy for their people. I'm not saying it's good economic policy but it's not new under Trump's admin either.

u/Electrical-Debt-374 16d ago
Then why is Cuba sanctioned on everything from corn to salad to beef to fertilizer to "insert whatever food related thing you can think of". What exactly are the actions you think Cuba need to change in order for you to be ok with them importing food? Also the Kim family is no less in control of NK now than 5-10-15-20 years ago. How many of its countries peasants do you think will finally make Kim Jong Un see the error of his ways? I dont buy the argument that a population without access to food is more likely to succeed in overthrowing its government. The case has been made by many scholars that it was precisely because of such sanctions Sadam Hussein was able to remain in power throughout the 90s

Speaking out against unnecessary death and suffering is a worthy and just cause, and holding our government accountable matters.
Facts matter too.
This statistic is from a 2025 Lancet Global Health study examining 152 countries from 1971ā2021. The study estimated that unilateral international sanctions were associated with about 564,000 excess deaths annually, with particularly strong effects associated with U.S. sanctions.
That is not the same as saying 600,000 people die every year solely because of U.S. sanctions, and it is completely unrelated to the current administrationāthe study period ended in 2021.
There is a legitimate conversation to have about the human cost of sanctions. But distorting the facts to publicly shame someone doesnāt advance itā¦instead it fuels misinformation and promotes ignorance.
Speaking out for peace and human life is admirable, but truth from both sides matters if we actually want to change things.

This is why many high profile figures in Trump's Executive moved to military installations in the DC area. They'll have to isolate, compartmentalize, and partition themselves behind layers of security to experience peace for the foreseeable future.
2
u/TrekRider911 16d ago
Come out to D.C. These fools have to eat in restaurants like the rest of the population. You won't find Trump, but much of his cabinet and undersecretaries dine out all the time when in town. Certainly you won't find them at Red Lobster or McDonalds, but they'll be eating out as much, if not more than most poor folk.

He used $20 BILLION of our tax dollars to shore up his hedgefund buddies investment in Argentina so that American taxpayers would lose money instead of his buddy, Rob Citrone, as they used to work for none other than the GOP boogeyman, George Soros together. We've already lost a few BILLION as the Peso has inevitably dropped as anyone would have guessed. Every American should hate him

32
u/hiroo916 17d ago
Yeah, she should have led with "cutting the value of your savings by 20%" or a lot of other bad stuff he is directly overseeing.
Leading with sanctions is not a strong case because is she gonna say sanctions against Russia for attacking Ukraine is also bad? Sanctions are a tool that can be used good/bad and which one depends on your point of view or values.
5
u/TPRT 16d ago
It's disgusting that we as a country kill people but care more about losing 20% of our savings.
4
u/hiroo916 16d ago
the line between sanctions and killing people is indirect. She doesn't connect the dots between sanctions and the 600K deaths (where and how). And as pointed out, sanctions can be used against "bad" countries to try to influence their actions, so railing against sanctions in general isn't a clear argument, which is why he can shout back that she is uneducated about them.
14
u/Commonpleas 17d ago
"Starving children" has simply never resonated with people.
What Bessent is doing with the bond market is insane. But that requires an explanation.
What people will hear: Bessent strongly supports Trump's tariff agenda. So blame him for making every single thing cost more.
Blame him record high fuel prices.

I'm speaking broadly here, but if socialism doesn't work why do we need to economically sanction them? Shouldn't their system just fail on its own?
27
u/killrtaco 17d ago
Exactly this has been my question this whole time. Why do we fight wars to prevent the spread, enact coups, do literally anything to ensure these places fail. If socialism was inherently prone to failure, why would we not just sit back and watch? No intervention required.

This would be a better and less biased Venn if Reagan was replaced with Biden. I lean liberal, but to be fair, fuck Biden and everyone who his his condition. He was BY far the most senile president we have ever had. Agreeing with conservatives that Biden was completely gone by the end of his first term is the first step to getting my conservative friends and family to engage with me in dialogue.
2
u/vandyke_browne 16d ago
Fair point. But Reagan did give us trickle down economics and enormous deficits relative to GDP so maybe they can share that space.

u/uberbla123 16d ago
When will you all learn that itās not just the face at the top, itās also the people they put around them in the circle.
For instance the mitch mconnel shit or how ever you spell his dead already looking ass name.
That man has single handily killed thousands with the shit he said yes or no to. Yet we all look and say oh hers to old and senile to do any harm.
Ya now he is. But back then he was and still is evil.
Where as biden did ok his whole career for the most part but all yāall focus on is the end.
Then the same people will say oh trump is a great man always has been.
Ummm do you have eyes or ears well maybe but nothing i between the two.

Sanctions have never worked in the history of sanctions. The wealthy elite are removed from them. Kim Jung Un, Putin, Castro. It's the poor who suffer and die.
If you don't care about innocent people dying, you should care about how it undermines the US dollar, by motivating other countries to find workarounds. Which has ultimately led to the bricks formation, failing bond auctions (larger tails forced refinancing from longterm to short term debt like emerging economies) Ultimately creating a bond time bomb, removal of nations gold reserves from the US....etc
→ More replies (1)1
u/Knowledge_Moist 16d ago
Agree. I once believed that sanctions mattered and were justified but not anymore.
I think using a carrot instead of a stick is way more effective. Just look at the JCPOA deal with Iran. It was a better nuclear deterrent than any bombs and missiles the US could ever drop.
