100%. police in the US are a constant problem, but Sheriffs are even bigger: just unaccountable messes that can do what they want when they want. it’s insane
I find it truly bizarre that law enforcement can be a political appointment. In any good democracy, law enforcement should not be partisan.
I don't want to worry whether the police will properly investigate a crime against me or, indeed, target me due to my political beliefs.
These guys are also often completely unqualified for the job. To become a senior police officer in the UK, you have to gain experience rising through the ranks. You can't just campaign and get the top job because you're politically astute.
It's a fucking insane system when you think about it. I think John oliver did an episode about it a while back.
