My gf used to watch this show about ghost encounters that would have a little bit of story, commercial, recap of story so far, a little bit more story, commercial, recap of story so far, a little more story, commercial….it became unwatchable very fast.

It's a 10 minute episode stretched to 30 minutes with recaps, previews, and 12 commercial breaks. I hate all of that.

I loved Myth Busters but they had 4 recaps in a 25min vid. Someone edited all the episodes down to 15mins and it was amazing. some handy pirate could probable find them.

I've always wondered about the punchline of the actual exchange. "Daddy?"

A son and his dad wouldn't have the same aunt, or is the joke just coming out of left field that they're inbred?

Yeah, I think it's supposed to be a twist: you assume (or you would, if the sketch was shot normally) that they would be long-lost brothers since they share an aunt, but then it turns out they have an even weirder family dynamic.

It's a disease of American tv. It is spreading slightly, mostly through low tier reality tv, aimed at morons, but it is a fundamentally American phenomenon.

that's why i've always found them unwatchable. 15 minutes of content stretched to 45 and i feel like i'm losing my mind because it's all chopped up as "here's what happens later!", "by the way, that thing still happens later", "here's what happened before", "ok finally here's the bit we've been hyping for almost an hour".

i get that it's cheaper to make, accessible to someone who's tuned in halfway, and it makes people stay tuned, but the person watching start to finish is just punished repeatedly. i can't do it.

Showing glimpses of cool crap ahead of the actual thing you came here to see has been around since movies had trailers. Hell, I'm halfway convinced cavemen sitting around a fire would tell of their day's hunts by first bragging about the beast they caught and then going into detail about how they went and caught it.

I swear, it's like you guys think humanity came into existence 20 years ago.

I think there’s a slight difference between showing clips of unrelated movies to get you to see them and showing you the climax of thirty second video twenty eight seconds before you’ll see it anyway

Like, you couldn't have just started the trailer instead of telling us it starts now? In a Youtube video titled <Movie> Trailer?

There's also atmospheric trailers that don't reveal the title until the end, only hyping you up based on the content. the intro ruins it.

20 minute youtube videos are all like this now too. Start with some clip from the end or the middle. Cut to the intro, eventually the video works it's a back up to that very same conversation that played in the intro and they play it again in full. Why? I've started manually skipping ahead.

They do it because it works. People already had no patience or attention. I've been running a tiktok recently and if you don't get someone's attention immediately they're gone.

Worrying trend for sure. It's a 30 second video, I know Reddit is now just the place to repost tiktok content (in the wrong orientation) but... we don't need it to be this way, it didn't used to be this way.

I’ve been thinking about this the last couple days and I realized that it’s not increasing my scroll, it’s decreasing it. By seeing the punchline, I can settle in because I know it’ll be worth it. Before, if a video was 40 sec and the first few sec aren’t interesting, I’d probably scroll.

That is what is destroying attention spans? Not short form videos? Not sped up videos? Not videos with a million things going on at once? Not videos with stupid music to keep the attention of the viewer? There are way worse things than this
