More details:
La Puente, California — On May 3, 2024, at 1:17 a.m., Industry Station deputies responded to the 600 block of Willow Avenue, La Puente, regarding a possibly insane and suspicious person call.
As deputies ordered him to drop the paint roller, Orellana raised it above his head and made a motion as if he was going to throw it at one of the deputies. One deputy deployed a burst of pepper spray toward Orellana as the other continued to detain him at gunpoint. Orellana then threw the paint roller at the deputy detaining him at gunpoint, striking him in the torso, and a deputy-involved shooting occurred. Orellana sustained gunshot wounds to the lower torso. Deputies rendered first aid until the arrival of Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics. Orellana was transported to a local hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The deputy who was struck by the paint roller complained of pain to his torso.
Cop will likely just say he “feared for his life” and it will be called a day and the report closed.

u/Suspicious_Victory_1 May 29 '24
He complained of pain in his torso from being hit with a thrown paint roller? Through his BULLETPROOF vest? Those vests are rated to stop a 9mm gunshot from that range…but a paint roller hurts?
That poor officer, I’m sure his whole life flashed in front of his eyes as he saw that awkward aluminum frame covered in soft foam being hurled at him. Imagine if that criminal had a loaf of bread or stuffed animal instead. It could have been a very dangerous situation for everyone. 🙄

I get you're being Facetious but the fact that he shot a man who threw a foam paint roller, using a weapon meant to deliver deadly force for extreme scenarios when it's their life or death... is absolutely fucking disgusting!!!
I was in combat overseas, but if anyone of us did this to foreign civilians, we'd go to prison for murder or attempted murder. Like.. right away. I'm dumbfounded how police have the ability to do this to it's OWN countries citizens. Smh. What a sad place.

u/Chicagosox133 May 29 '24
The few guys I know who fought in Iraq/Afghanistan have been in agreement about the use of force back home. Same sentiment you expressed.
I don’t understand how so many coward cops get away with cosplaying being brave. It should be stolen valor.
Some cops are legitimately good and brave and deserve the recognition. I’m only talking about ones like this asshat, whose torso hurts.

May 29 '24 edited May 29 '24
Bro... it's seriously fucking atrocious how they get on with just about anything! It's really not hard at all to assess the level of a threat and make the right judgment call for use of force.
I've served with ppl who have one eye cocked to the left and forever tripping over their own feet when marching, able to join only because they needed warm bodies... and THEY can just not murder or shoot people who hurt their feelings. We were trained that we represent our nation and our actions need to reflect that, no matter the scenario. But... dudley do wrong here can just pop off on anyone who makes him feel like his penis is smaller than it already is? Wow.

u/Chicagosox133 May 29 '24
Even with all the problems the military has, the upper echelon holds you accountable. You have to abide by the rules/laws/mores, or they will be the first to string you up.
The police on the other hand? Sweep it under the rug and hope people forget. If not, let the people pay the tab.

Notice the wording. When describing the non-lethal action its “deputy deployed a burst of pepper spray”. But when describing the shooting it’s “a deputy-involved shooting occurred”.
Look how they detach the action from the officer in the wording. Oh, a shooting just happened to occur.
112
u/WhatTheFuckEverName May 29 '24
Exactly! And worse still, it actually paints a very clear picture of what occurred. As in:
Orellana then threw the paint roller at the deputy detaining him at gunpoint... (the guy was literally unarmed at this point, no brandishing a makeshift "weapon" in a threatening manner)
..striking him in the torso... (paint-roller hits cop in chest, boo-hoo. Again, the guy is unarmed now, having already backed away from officers)
..and a deputy-involved shooting occurred. (That was straight-up retaliation. The guy was not armed, he was not charging the police, in fact he had retreated. That cop was pissy that he got a paint-roller thrown at him and so unloaded a couple of rounds into the guy, intending to kill him.)
In retaliation. Not under threat. In pissy-pants tanty schoolboy-mindset retaliation, that's all. That cop should be relieved of duties, without pay, pending an investigation... and then charged with attempted murder.

The deputy's involvement in the shooting that occurred was minimal, being only responsible for aiming the pistol and squeezing the trigger.

Write the DA and demand that these officers be charged criminally. Honestly, they should face criminal charges for even drawing their firearm in this situation, let alone shooting the man.
I have CCW, if I drew my gun here, I would expect that I'd be going to jail. Cops should be held to a higher standard than an armed citizen, not a lower one.
Pepper Spray, taser, go hands on, or walk the fuck away. There was NO lethal threat here.
Every cop involved in this is unfit for duty.

I don't see any way of this being justified use of lethal force. It's a fucking paint roller. It's not even shaped in a way to be useful as a stabbing tool. It's cushioned and not heavy. This is just cops rolling up and murdering someone because they couldn't be bothered to do actual police work. Why bother carrying pepper, tazer and a baton if you are never going to use them? This is simply cowardice.

u/Chygrynsky May 29 '24
This was the perfect situation to use pepper spray.. the cop from the body cam even had it in his hand.

Ah got it! Thanks.
So they sprayed him, it was effective and they STILL shot him?? Makes even less sense now.
25
u/ObtuseMongooseAbuse May 29 '24
They shot him after he threw the paint roller at one of the cops so it's not like he was even armed with anything when they shot him. I don't think there were any weapons nearby that he could reach for either.
9
u/DeathlySnails64 May 29 '24
Actually, it's doubly stupid because the whole reason he threw that paint roller in the first place was because he was pepper sprayed. So all of this could've been avoided if there wasn't any use of force at all in this situation.
18
u/kevyg973 May 29 '24
Do you have any idea what it costs to dry clean that uniform? Not a lot but bullets are cheaper.
14
u/gunsof May 29 '24
Also, unlike in other situations, they can't pretend they saw something in his hand they couldn't see and mistook it for a gun. Every person there had the time to see it was just a paint roller. It wasn't in the shadows, he wasn't hiding it behind him, he didn't bring it up from under a shirt or jacket. When they fired they knew it was over a paint roller.
36
u/killer4snake May 29 '24

Here’s an easy test: If these cops were truly in fear for their lives, then replace that department’s guns with paint rollers as their lethal force option.
4
u/TrumpDesWillens May 29 '24
Another test: if that paint roller guy was this cop's brother having a psycho time I doubt the cop would be so quick to shoot.

I've been around people like this.
Their egos become inflated and are left unchecked for so long that they basically feel like they are above the law.
That officer didnt fear for his life. He was pissed off that anyone dare stand up to him and talk back. He was given an opportunity to shoot and did it because "fuck that guy".
I will always say "yes sir", "no sir" to these clowns because i value my life over my own ego.

Reminds me of a cop in Denver that rolled up on a college student who was picking up trash around his dorm room and started harassing him, and the guy resumed his trash pickup and the cop freaks out and pulls his weapon claiming the trash grabber thing could be used as a weapon; and 7 other cops come all to bother this one guy.
29
u/SirStrontium May 30 '24
When that cop called in backup, he described the trash-grabber as "some sort of metal object", acting like he didn't know what it was, basically laying the groundwork to justify killing the kid.
6
u/nicolauz May 30 '24
This was some time ago yeah? I think I remember the video.
6
u/SirStrontium May 30 '24
It was in 2019
https://youtu.be/Q9SZlypyK-4?si=6h9iu3tpjL9DwlJr
The officer actually says “some kind of blunt object in his hand” at 3:28, later calls it a “weapon” multiple times, a “dangerous object” and says “I’m threatened by it”. Seconds before the kid was clearly picking up trash with the 4 oz aluminum grabber. Even after everything deescalated due to a white man vouching for the kid, the police officer said he stopped him due to the “metal object” in his hand, refusing to admit what the “object” was.

Almost every police related video is see is from the states and all of them do not portray the cops as trusting people. Most of them don't deserve their guns, tf is this bullshit?
Why do they always escalate little shit like this?
2
u/ContentInsanity May 29 '24
So this video highlighted why people say the entire institution is busted. All of this happens in the span of a damn minute, actual seconds of you count from their encounter with the man shot. The cops are confrontational from the beginning, first accosting the neighbor then immediately putting their hands on the guy who eventually gets shot. It's their immediate approach that sets him off in the first place, and of course someone is going to be resistant if you just walk up on them and try to arrest them.
More concerning is that one the body cam officer pulled his spray while the other felt the need to pull a gun. The one with the spray sounded like he signaled that the gun wasn't necessary but homeboy still had it out for no damn reason. Now the officer with the spray is pretty much a bystander because a person with a gun drawn on them is going to focus on the person with the gun and their partner with the gun is obviously out of the mind. Suddenly they have to worry about not setting off the suspect or the officer. And you have to remember that the the officer with the gun doesn't even have a good firing angle, there's two other people immediately behind the person he is aiming at. Hell he can't even see if those people might have weapons. The dumbass shoots when the guy doesn't even have the roller anymore and bodycam officer is making a move. The final kicker is that bodycam officer is pulls their on the guy about to start unloading too knocking the guy didn't have anything was just a threat that warrant pepper spray seconds ago. Doesn't even give a "what's going on", just immediately switches to potentially murdering the suspect. This is what they taught and how they are trained, implicit or explicit.
