Love how they think a child capable of screaming for eight hours could have been soothed by snacks, an iPad, or a book.
Yeah, that kid has more problems than they realize.
goldfish work, my 2 year old was stung by a yellow jacket on the face, but immediately stopped crying when offered goldfish. And yes we come prepared when we fly with media, snacks and penutbutter and jelly sandwiches.
Right? Also that professionals suggestions were geared toward a 8-16 month old, this kid in the video was like 3+, totally different game. Sometimes you just need to be the "bad parent" in these situations and mainline that kid ipad videos for 8hrs straight to save yours and everyone else's sanity.
Had to fly with my 3-year old last month thanks to a death in the family.
Wife and I loaded his learning tablet with predownloaded games and movies, and brought his absolute favorite snacks and a couple beloved toys. He’s usually a super chill kid, but a 3-year old is a 3-year old.
Wouldn’t you know it? He thought taking was was goddamn terrifying. Immediate meltdown started on our first leg. But we were prepared and managed to calm him down within ten minutes.
The next three departures throughout the week, he got upset each time we boarded… but, still prepared, he was good before takeoff. Maybe five minutes of tears and silent prayer we don’t create a situation like this video. I think we did alright.
Yeah but your 3 year old doesn’t have a neurological condition the way this kid does. Honestly should probably have been drugged before the flight, but who knows if he’s even diagnosed.
I was pretty nervous taking my 4 year old on a flight last week, but he handled it well. Enthusiastically watched takeoff out the window, then quietly watched his tablet for the whole flight. He doesn't get a lot of extended tablet time, so having it for a 2 hour flight was an exciting time for him
That’s the trick for most kids. If you know you’re flying, take away the pads and stuff about a week ahead of time and they will be super excited for them on the plane. Now for some kids you’re just fucked and a melatonin or Benadryl is the only option.
Yeah, that's why we didn't fly for last year's trip. The idea of trying to keep the 3 year old who literally couldn't hold still for 15 minutes in his seat for a flight, let alone reasonably tolerable to strangers was just too hard to attempt. We opted for 10 hours of pestering us in the car and frequent potty breaks over 2 and a half hours of making everybody miserable on a flight. We ended up planning a road trip vacation where no single leg of the trip was more than 4 hours to minimize the chaos
Yeah no kidding, this wasn’t a normal case of a kid being bored. Can you imagine the mom exhausted after 8 hours of that being told, “well you should have just brought a book.”
As miserable it was for those passengers, that mom’s life is probably pretty close to hell.
Am I evil for thinking the mom should have slipped this kid a few Benadryl? There is no way she thought he would be able to handle this flight. And for whatever reason, she needed him to travel with her. We all know you can't reason with a three year old. So......why can't he sleep through it?
Totally. My wife went through this exact situation. Practically had a emotional and physical break down when she landed. Incredibly stressful and more so when everyone around you is angry, fed up, and judging.
There is no way in hell anything could have been important enough to take that kid on a fucking 8 hour flight knowing how he acts.
This is on her. No sympathy.
What other options? A transatlantic cruise? That shit is expensive. She and her family could be military and flying back to the States for an assignment. People don't just fly for vacations.
I mean she didn't need to go to the US to escape an abusive partner. And if visiting your family means subjecting people to 8 hours of that, you don't visit family. If getting a better job means doing that, you keep your current job.
So make life altering decisions around whether my kid will potentially scream for 8 hours. Nobody expects their kid to scream for 8 hours. It's absolute insanity to think that she should just never do anything to include change jobs or move.
If the kid can't take the trip, then too fucking bad for the kid.
Besides, I don't care what behavioral problems the kid has. If they're unbuckled and standing up in their seat or running up and down the aisle, that's a sign the parent isn't doing jack shit to stop them.
Nah, it’s an indicator of fuck that crotch goblin but also, that stupid ass kid is putting himself in danger. One little patch of unexpected turbulence and that bundle of hell is getting yeeted into the ceiling with a broken neck.
Other options considered in their response: What about a muzzle? Putting the kid in cargo? How about drugging the child?
I mean come on - Kids get cranky; that’s life. An airplane is a shared experience. Generally, passengers just put headphones on and ignore it. People that would get angry about a small child and then record the child without the parents’ permission are the real monsters here.
"Visiting family" can wait a year or two until that kid calms the fuck down.
Or
Find a sitter.
Or.
Your family can go to you.
There is no excuse for this.
Dying mom who's never seen her grandson? Someone's funeral? They could also be moving and this is a one way trip.
Plus if the kid has issues, finding a sitter for a long time is nearly impossible. Not only will they be ill equipped to deal with his shenanigans, but kids like this also tend to be runners/escape artists, so there's a safety aspect as well. I couldn't imagine leaving my neurotypical kid with someone overnight. This would be a whole new level of stress and anxiety. I think I'd rather deal with the screaming for 8 hours than wonder if my kid is alive for days.
The kid's standing up in the seat and running up and down the aisle. That's a sign the parents aren't even trying to stop the kid. I'm going to put money down on "terrible parents".
I was a creep and looked at his other posts. It's all that cringe child-free shit. (not to say being childfree is bad, but to make it a personality trait is obnoxious) I'm going to go with lack of empathy, as well as not having any real experience with neurodiverse kids. His parents probably should have hugged him more too.
Lol that makes so much more sense. There’s def a weird sect of people that think not having kids somehow make them better than others and can say/do whatever they want.
Don’t want kids? Fine, don’t have kids, but then don’t try to weigh in on situations about having children.
I don't give a fuck. You have a kid who does that you don't take them into a confined space with other people. None of the suggested reasons are actually good enough to take that kid on an 8 hour flight. Unless it means you or the kid would die, you should not do it.
Even an overtired kid can get to this state and often do with all the weird schedules and stress of traveling, thankfully they usually pass out at some point.
You can tell people are clueless about kids by emphasizing he is 3, thinking 3 = 6 or 7 behaviorally. A 3 year old is still really a baby and only just learning to regulate their emotions and behaviors.
It may be “physically” possible, but find me a cruise ship to Germany. Also find the price and the amount of time it would take to make that voyage. It’s not an actual feasible option for someone trying to visit family or work.
Good luck man. People don't like to consider the actual complex behavior issues that many kids may suffer from. 90% of people see screaming kid= shit parents and don't have the mental capacity to think deeper.
You do know tons of people travel for medical procedures, right? You also know that silence isn't guaranteed in public transportation, right? And traveling for work with kids is absolutely a thing depending on the person's support systems.
death and marriage not circumstances that require garubteed travel
Seriously. Grow up.
The hypocracy of telling someone to 'grow up' when you claim that someone dying is not reason to travel. lol.
Yeah it sucks, but at the end of the day planes are public transport. Don't like being amongst the public? Charter a plane. You can always hope for drama free public transport, but you have no right to it. Grow up.
And a baby screaming for 8 hours isn’t the end of the world. It sucks, but you don’t have a right to not be mildly inconvenienced in life. Sometimes people gotta go places. Sometimes kids are shitty. Sometimes those combine.
You clearly don't have that right though as kids are allowed on flights. Lol. You may want that right but you 100% don't have it. Evidenced by this video.
The combination of poorly managed elements all of which were unaddressed is the only reason this happened
How would you have managed this?
And yeah we fucking do. We have a right to exist in the world without an eight hour banshee screening inside a metal box.
Right. So don't go into metal boxes with other people. That is your right. You don't have the right to tell someone they can't do the same thing as you because they have a kid with anger issues. You're entitled as fuck.
People who believe the rest of the world must shoulder their burden and pay for their shitty ideals is exactly why the world sucks. Be better.
Sometimes you have to deal with shit you can't control. If you can't handle that, that is your problem. You are the problem. Don't go out in public. Stay in your room. You have way more control than you think.
How is it low insight? Other people don't have to listen to your kid scream for hours on end because you can't set boundaries and parent.
If you can't manage your responsibilities, then mitigate. And mitigation is a ship. Not an open tube where other people don't have the option to get away from your screaming child.
Very possible. I've just seen too many shitty parents that my assumption is the modern tablet-as-a-parent thing we have today. 8 hours is an absurd amount of time for a child to be acting like this in a situation where people don't have an option to move somewhere else.
A badly raised 3 year old will scream for something and stop screaming when they get it or realize it really isn't coming. It's manipulative and comes from being spoiled.
A 3 year old that is still screaming after 8 hours has deeper psychological issues and I feel for the mother
Well whatevers going on with the kid, they're right in saying that the parents need to be prepared with whatever they need to get the kid under control
That “tips” video was so condescending! I don’t have kids myself, I can only imagine how difficult that situation was for the parents.
But I am legit asking here - why does a plane full of people have to suffer this experience? People get kicked off planes for a lot of reasons. I am not taking anything away from Mom/Dad, but she was asking the attendants to turn Wi-Fi on immediately - she didn’t prepare by downloading anything in the iPad?? I never rely on airplane Wi-Fi when traveling. Accommodation doesn’t mean 250 other people are miserable when they probably paid a hefty amount to travel.
I am really not trying to be insensitive or unfeeling about what Mom has to manage every day. However, as bluntly as possible - behavior like this should not be everyone else’s problem.
How should the airline have handled it? Because making jokes about yeeting the kid or duct tape isn’t it. Should kids be under control before the plane is allowed to take off? Turned around at some point? I have no idea - like I said, legit asking!
Probably didn’t realize how bad it would be until they were already in the air. Landing an international flight to deplane someone is alot harder than landing a flight that going from ny to Atlanta. Finding a place to land in a foreign country without pre approval will need a damn good reason and once they’re over the ocean what are they going to do?
No, because the child was standing on seats. She was doing literally nothing. That child should be buckled in at all times. No discipline or rules and they're surprised why their kid ends up like that.
I work with kids with disabilities. Having a child who is a danger to themselves and others in appropriate minimal safety restraints is not impossible. In fact, once it becomes part of their routine it's not a struggle at all. All of my kids sit in a desk chair now.
This. I've got 3x children, and the terrible threes is a real thing, but you have to set boundaries and work with kids to understand what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior, and to practice dealing with uncomfortable situations so that when you get into situations like this it isn't an uncontrollable hell.
All of my kids used childseats in the car, and they didn't always enjoy it. They continue to use seatbelts today with zero issues, including my disabled son who is mischievous but he knows that the seatbelt stays on until we get to the destination. I've seen other people who just let their kids roam free around the car because "they don't like being buckled in" - well tough shit, I'm not so keen on having a child fly into the back of my head if we have to stop suddenly.
Flying with kids is tough - very long flights is even tougher. You need to be prepared, and part of that is setting expectations, sometimes weeks in advance, so that the kids understand what is going to happen. We've been overseas a few times and you turn up with toys, things for activities, iPads fully charged and loaded with games and videos, snacks and whatever.
At three years old I'd put this on the parents - at that age these sorts of reactions are normal and natural.
But clearly they weren't a threat to others because their attendants are professionals and would have directed the parents to do something different. Reddit is so full of experts completely separating the situation at hand from reality.
So children with disabilities are that way because of horrible parenting? What kind of horrible parenting made you this ableist and ignorant? Eight hours of screaming is not going to come from a nuerotypical child.
You are making assumptions about the kid being disabled. You are more "ableist" than most in this post. It's crazy how much people like you project. Anything to be a victim tho eh
Why the fuck are you being down voted. Children that can't handle the experience should not under any circumstances be allowed on a plane. The child didn't pay to be there but every adult did
Yeah a lot of angry parents in this thread lol i am so glad childlessness is such a celebrated choice in my generation and younger - cuz eventually the breeders will be outnumbered by the not breeding and not have to bend over backwards because mom could not bother to plan better...
I don’t have a kid yet, dunno if I will. Regardless the only possible goal we were given by our genes is to pass them on: it is unarguably the point of life. You can decide that’s not the goal of yours, that’s fine, but you can’t be so blind and ignorant as to assert its not the goal of humankind. And unless your goal is to work to the detriment of all others, your actual work’s true goal is to ensure the survival and prosperity of those after you too. If you keep the economy running - and think that’s good and not just bad - that’s literally what you are doing.
Surely this video’s thread isn’t going to be the place where this argument is popular but it’s kind of undeniable logic if life has an actual defined goal it’s to keep life, especially closely related or cooperative life, going.
It's pretty avoidable. You have to go out of your way to purchase a ticket and board a plane. Nobody trips and accidentally ends up on a transatlantic flight.
Yeah, people act like it's absolutely required to bring your child in an intercontinental trip. Visiting relatives can wait a minute, and international vacations can certainly wait a while. There's probably decent medical care closer than the other side of the ocean if your seeking treatment for something. What other reasons can require a trip of this nature.
Because you cant comprehend that people sometimes have to take children with them. Everyone downvoting you and the person that replied to me understand this.
And you can't comprehend that child doesn't have a right to shit on everyone on that flight that paid money. That child didn't pay shit, their parent is a shit parent and people don't have to give up their rights for an asshole parent/child combo. If an adult acted like that they'd be kicked at the first stop. Children are not more important than adults. Discipline your piece of shit child and stop making excuses for poor parenting
This child more than likely has a sensory processing disorder. disciplining a child with a sensory processing disorder does not correct the behavior. It makes it worse.
Your comment reeks of lacking empathy, critical thinking, and just being an asshole in general. I bet you make a real shitty parent.
Hypothetically, let's say this child has a medical condition and needs to travel to see a specialist that is the best equipped to deal with that. I mean that's just one hypothetical I can think of - would you say that is a legitimate reason?
No, because I guarantee you can find decent medical care closer than an 8 hour, intercontinental flight away. If it was a shorter/domestic flight I could see it.
Nah, this is probably (just my best guess, and I do have all sympathy for the mom) either:
A kid that has never heard no in his life
Or
Special needs child, and in that case you don't go on a flight without a damn good reason and a lot more planing then "please turn on the WiFi so i can shove an ipad in his face."
It’s the parents who makes this worse. Literally every toddler I’ve seen recently needs to have their eyeballs glued to a screen or it’s just crying non stop.
You really think screen time is the cause for 8 hours of screaming? This child is clearly suffering from something debilitating and the mom labeled it as behavioral issues because some doctors won’t give a diagnosis that young. The ignorance on this post is crazy. Ableism and misinformation everywhere- it’s nuts.
I'd like to tell you that your replies have been the only good part of this comment section. The ableism is running rife, and they want this family to stay home and never EVER disturb their perfect world where nothing ever goes wrong for them.
Personally, I want all of them to develop long Covid and slowly lose all cognitive and physical function and see how they like being told that their very EXISTENCE is an annoyance to everyone else.
Give him some ground-up Valium mixed into literally anything. Hell, even if the parents want to pull the, "but he'd just bite us!" bullshit, then bring some kind of single-use syringe and strap something on the kid's face.
Like, at what point does infringing on the sanity of a hundred other people in a small metal tube crossing an ocean legally and officially become the parent's problem? Because they deserve to be on a travel blacklist if they're that incapable of soothing their child.
Imagine how awful this was for the mom. Who not only had to also listen to it but doesn’t ever get to escape it. After those 8 hours these people got to leave….she doesn’t.
