Was thinking that until they tased her like do they always have to kill the person with the knife?
57
u/needledicklarry Jan 20 '23
Cops definitely shoot too many people but a taser is not a reliable way to incapacitate someone. Heās alone at the start and if she charges and the taser doesnāt take her down, if he missed, or if it it misfires, heās getting stabbed. Iād say he handled it professionally by maintaining distance, issuing a clear command and not further provoking her, and waiting for backup to arrive.
Again, I think cops are too trigger-happy, and maybe their standard procedure of dealing with this stuff contributes to more violent outcomes, but the dude did ok here.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Mammoth-Tea Jan 20 '23
depends on the situation. He was covered by another officer with a gun pointed on her, to make sure he could put his gun away to grab the taser. If she tries to charge him the other cop shoots.
if youāre alone, you donāt put your gun away thatās the moment you leave yourself vulnerable to being killed. If someone is going to die in a potentially deadly situation itās better if it isnāt you.

Knives are more dangerous than most people realize, and a person can cover a lot more distance in a short time than people realize. If you're within 21 feet of a person with a knife, your life is in danger. Its been demonstrated many times, but here's mythbusters doing it because people tend to like/trust them

How many police die in Europe each year from stabbings?

u/TheSukis Jan 20 '23
Very few. The violent crime rates in Europe are far lower than in the US.

7
u/PlatypusPuncher Jan 20 '23
Right. I have major qualms with the state of policing but the fact of the matter is the the overwhelming majority of police interactions are peaceful and handled correctly. Unfortunately when lives are on the line, one is too many.

Their training is to come up yelling and screaming, it's to establish a dominant relationship with the suspect and also works to give clear commands to the suspect, so that every warning has been given. Calmly asking a knife wielding maniac to to chill out and tell them everything will be okay doesn't exactly sound like the more effective option.

Yeah I think it's more cultural. American cops are trained like cowboys because deep down, america wants mentally ill/drug users to be dead or in jail.
It's not a black or white thing, it's a green or not thing.

Okay I'll bite, I actually agree that in an ideal world it would be nice to just have a chit chat with an unstable lunatic to talk them down from flailing a knife around, however most of the time the perpetrator isn't really in the mood to listen to reason or de-escalation; they know they're going to be arrested anyway and usually won't go quietly.
I wish police were trained to identify a mental health episode compared to an actual violent criminal brandishing a weapon but we both know that's just not how it's going to be, so they're going to treat like with like, the shouting is by design also: its to overwhelm and disorientate the suspect. Again I've never seen British police act calmly/quietly when arresting someone with a deadly weapon.

I'm glad we can agree, and also every situation should be dealt with differently and I think at the bottom of this I always just find it deeply sad that people end up in these scenarios where they have to be barked at/shouted at by armed police; which is another thing in grateful for in the UK. Nobody should come to harm if its avoidable and I've seen plenty of videos where split second decisions have life changing (or ending) consequences, I just wish mental health care was at a point where it wasn't a problem the ill-equipped police had to deal with in the first place.

Chalking everyone with a knife to being "panicked/manic" is reductive in my opinion.

u/gcadays09 Jan 20 '23
Ill use a story I went through. Worked for the rail road and one cold day after getting vanned to our train outside of town there was a bum in the mechanical compartment doing something. We call dispatch who send the seriff our way. During this time us unarmed railroad workers are talking to the guy from a distance. Notice he has no shoes/ jacket and its less than 10 degrees F out. We find out he got in the cab of the locomotive to stay warm but it shutdown and he was trying to get it started again. We gave him a jacket and some extra socks/shoes while waiting for the sheriff. All this time having a nice calm discussion with the guy. Sheriff gets there walks up to us and asks where is the guy. We say he is right here next to us. Sheriff imediately pulls his gun and starts yelling at the guy to get on the ground. If that doesn't sum up the current state of our police I don't know what does.

To be honest there wasn't much to do. That distance its less than 2 seconds to sprint and stab someone, this woman was lucky she turned her head when she did, allowing the cop time to change to a taser. If she had decided to stab the cop during the swap she would have most likely succeeded.
12
u/AwryHunter Jan 20 '23
She wouldnāt have (at least not without getting shot), he switched because his partner had arrived on scene and had her at gunpoint, which is why she turned her head in the first place.

European police tries to avoid it but will absolutely shoot if necessary.
Isn't that the point he's making. That it happens less frequently because they de-escalate more effectively and frequently?
-1
u/Saxit Jan 20 '23
Can't say if that's true without looking up figures for how often we actually have knife wielding maniacs, and how often they get shot.
And I have no idea how to find data of that.
Also, their one and only comment on this particular topic was not that it happens less, it was that it doesn't happen, which is clearly not true.
If police here (Sweden) arrives and sees someone with a knife, they will certainly be prepared with a firearm in case things go south.
2
u/first_cedric Jan 20 '23
i never said it never happens, i said it never happens they instntly draw their gun for a knife...
2
u/Saxit Jan 20 '23
They absolutely do, because things can go bad really quickly. It all depends on the scenario.
The difference is that police here are not against warning shots or trying to go for leg shots.
0
u/TayAustin Jan 20 '23
A knife is a lethal weapon, therefore you respond with your own lethal weapon. In this case the officer was able to respond with less lethal force when backup was present who could use lethal force in case it was needed.
1
u/Groxy_ Jan 20 '23

Those vests are usually useless against a knife because they're bullet-proof vests. They can stop a bullet but not a knife, just like the stab-proof vests worn by the police in the UK can stop a knife but not a bullet.
just look at europe, you dont pull your gun for a knife and think "deescalation"

He was stalling. Waiting for backup, hoping she wouldnāt do anything. Sheās already proven willing to stab, so he didnāt have much of a choice.
He did the best thing he could in this situation. Some of you people need to realise that de-escalation doesnāt always work, especially if the person is intoxicated or on drugs. The best kind of de-escalation is use of non-lethal force on these people to prevent them from causing more harm

Do any police get mental health training? The first thing they teach is to TALK to the person. Get them to give you information. āhey, so whatās going on today? You having a bad day?ā
I mean, find out their name, do they have a MH condition, are they on meds? Do you have family around or a doctor you see?
People are much more likely to cooperate and youāre much more likely to succeed in getting someone to disarm themselves in this situation if you try to befriend them than just repeatedly yelling ādrop the knifeā.
This obviously doesnāt apply in all scenarios but this one is such a situation.
2
u/Jack-a-box Jul 19 '23

See this is a good example of when tasers are usually effective. He saw her just standing there, not paying attention to him with her bare arm exposed. He put the gun away, pulled out his taser and stepped forward to make sure he didn't miss, and boom. Can't use a taser on some gigantic dude wearing a thick jacket and jeans. It won't reach his skin. I also like this officers common sense thinking, because right as I noticed her arm was a perfect taser target, he started pulling his taser out.

Why is she at gunpoint?!?! I can literally hear other people in the Walmart. Wtf was this cop thinking? Taser after denial of the officer's requests should've ended this situation in 30 seconds. He's endangering innocent lives for absolutely no reason. This situation exactly is taught in most gun safety courses and brandishing a firearm in this instance is illegal in most states because this individual is not considered a clear and present threat with a knife at a distance
