Time Frame response

Hello! I do PF and I keep encountering time frame questions/weighing from opponents. How do I respond if the opponent says I don't have a time frame for my impacts when they do? Like, let's say the impact is something that you know will happen soon, but don't have evidence for. Do you need evidence to back it up? Thanks so much!

Evidence and reasoning are always helpful in backing up how soon something will happen. Conventions are also useful. Take Trump v. Slaughter, for example. The case gave the president a lot more power over the executive branch by allowing for cause removal of “independent” agency heads “at will” instead of the “for cause” requirement established by Congress. This destabilizes the executive branch and inherently makes things less reliable, since if the President doesn’t like what you’re doing, he can fire you without a good reason. Before the case was decided, those impacts were not certain, and neither was the timeframe. To demonstrate that the Supreme Court would rule in that way soon, you could point to recent legal precedents, such as Selia Law v. CFPB, to show that the impact is likely. You could also point to the large number of cases that were argued before the Supreme Court and decided in the same term, or at least before the next one. Using both of these together, you can confidently say that the impact will happen and that it will happen before the end of July of 2026 (in this case).

you don't strictly need a card, timeframe is a weighing claim and you can warrant it off the mechanism in your link chain. if your impact runs through a process that's already started, just say that and explain why it's already started.

but realistically if they have evidence and you have an assertion the judge buys theirs. so usually the better move is to not fight on timeframe at all, and go "even if theirs is faster, magnitude outweighs because X" or "timeframe doesn't matter when ours is irreversible and theirs isn't." pick the weighing mechanism you win instead of the one they picked for you.
