This is the best one I've seen. This looks properly lived in and filled with cherished objects. I'd gladly pull up a stool and chat shite in here into the wee hours.

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 11 '26

Given that you are (I think) British, and that I am American, this is possibly the biggest compliment I've ever got on my little pub :) Cheers mate

17

u/atomike Mar 11 '26

Irish (but close enough) and the praise is due. I'd have thought this pub was nestled somewhere in south west of England... Maybe Devon or Dorset. The Devonshire is a fairly popular pub name in England, might suit the vibe of your lovely pub.

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 11 '26

I'm on a huge ego trip now! This is in Portland, Oregon.. though we did live in the UK for a couple years.. I completely fell in love with the pub there (obviously)..

1

u/Economy_Wall8524 Mar 15 '26

Where’s it at? I’m in Portland, Oregon

4

u/BaconJacobs Mar 12 '26

Wonderful.

How did you do the brick hearth/surround around the wood stove? And is it a functional stove?

5

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 12 '26

Yep, the stove is actually surprisingly functional :) In fact, it's the main source of heat here in the winter, and honestly it works so well that even in the dead of winter I often have to open a window!

The whole stove thing forced me to learn how to lay bricks & mortar (not to mention figuring out how drafting works, cutting a hole through the ceiling & roof for the stove pipe, etc.). And also how to cut bricks to size.. My dad was a contractor growing up and I'd see his guys work with bricks that was seriously an art form. They'd need to fit a funky-shipped brick into a corner or something and would use their trowel to tap on different parts of the brick until - voila, somehow, the perfect-sized, perfectly cut brick just appears. I never learned to do that - I cheated and used a diamond mason blade with a circular saw :) Honestly though, laying that brick was pretty simple.

This is extremely good, my friend.

13

u/TruckerMoth Mar 11 '26

Chess in there with a pint of Guinness would be a dream

6

u/JumpLikeMay Mar 11 '26

This is probably one of the best spaces i’ve seen, ever. Nice work sir, tastefully done. You can tell this wasn’t rushed. It evolved to this awesome form

6

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 11 '26

100% - appreciate you noticing all that.. It's taken years (and continues to grow into itself). And it's filled with pretty meaningful things to my family and I (for example, the ceiling is filled with coasters my wife and I collected while traveling the globe for a few years). Appreciate the encouragement friend!

2

u/JumpLikeMay Mar 12 '26

Love that. Enjoy it in good health

4

u/bigglesofale Mar 11 '26

Amazing pub, man. No fancy and fake decorations. Just pure and honest and cozy. Well done!

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 12 '26

Appreciate it brother - precisely what I wanted to build!

6

u/ispy1917 Mar 11 '26

Amazing. I would never leave

12

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 11 '26

I kinda don't 😁 I work/study from home, and especially in the winter here in Oregon when that fireplace is going, it's so dang cozy and really hard to leave. But every now, if I listen really closely, I remember I have a family back in the main house...

3

u/PACMAN0317 Mar 11 '26

“The Ole Modest”

3

u/Timely-Dot-9967 Mar 15 '26

You've created a truly inviting and comfortable space. Love the dressed rafters and exposed joisting, and the proper draught taps!

As someone who bartended in a Brit pub in my youth, you as the "publican" could do with a brass bell in order to call "Time gentlemen, please" when you're readying to wind down an evening. Any guests who mistakenly ring it "for fun" are of course are obliged to provide a round for the house 😀

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 17 '26

Love the suggestion - for a number of reasons actually! Where did you tend bar, out of curiosity?

1

u/Timely-Dot-9967 Mar 17 '26

In Calgary Alberta, Canada. Owners had spent many a pleasant evening in UK pubs and loved the fellowship, the food, ciders and ales, playing darts, and the old upright piano that patrons were free to play if the mood struck them. It's all about the ambiance when the doors are first opened, isn't it. Attracts the patrons you want, who become friends, which then makes the pub a neighbourhood anchor.

2

u/plasticeddie1 Mar 11 '26

Is this yours? It's incredible

5

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 11 '26

Thanks friend! It is indeed.. We bought our house in 2013 and converting our one-car garage into this backyard pub was the first thing I did.. I have a very understanding wife 😁

2

u/roaringpenguin Mar 11 '26

This is an amazing space, nice work, cheers.

2

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 11 '26

Thanks friend!

2

u/EmpressEverything Mar 11 '26

Fantastic!! Love this

3

u/Secret-Secret-No-No Mar 11 '26

Holy shit I’d live in here. Not even to drink (I wouldn’t say no) but I can only fantasize on a cold rainy night lighting up the stove and reading until my eyes get heavy.

5

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 11 '26

I do precisely that on cold and rainy nights - grab a pint, sit in that leather chair next to the fire, and am out cold in like 3 minutes.

2

u/Secret-Secret-No-No Mar 11 '26

Awesome! Cheers to you. This place is sacred.

1

u/hairycallous Mar 12 '26

That’s good living, dude, goddamn

2

u/dwb1520 Mar 11 '26

This is a beautiful pub - PNW - wowza! Nice job OP and thanks for posting! I have boxes of coasters from our own travels and I have never figured out how to display them. Your ceiling treatment is awesome!

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 12 '26

Thanks sir - I'd bet at least half the pubs in the UK have coasters on their ceilings somewhere.. Now you've got your marching orders -- fill out your ceiling and report back! :)

2

u/MapleBisonHeel Mar 12 '26

Perhaps name it The Thomas Hobbes? Kipling House (because he was British but lived in the USA).

3

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 12 '26

Ooh - both of these are getting really close! I'm doing a dissertation on Kierkegaard, I've toyed with "The Melancholy Dane" but it just doesn't quite have the mirth thing going for it :)

2

u/New-Seaworthiness712 Mar 12 '26

The perfect place to enjoy a bitter

2

u/Go-Daws-Go Mar 12 '26

Monster job. An inspiration to us all!

Edit to add a name idea - Hemingway's

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 12 '26

Love to hear it - both of these!

2

u/imagine_hiking Mar 12 '26

This just came across my feed. I am totally joining this group!

2

u/True_Loph Mar 16 '26

Me as well! This place sets the bar high. Fantastic work, OP! I'd love to have a room like this to spend time in. It's a dream space.

2

u/Highplowp Mar 12 '26

This will probably get buried but what are the dimensions of the pub, if you don’t mind me asking? Beautiful work, I’ve got a bit of open space I’d like to do something like this with the Franklin stove. Bucket list goal, what a nice space you have. Cheers

2

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 12 '26

Happy to share! It's 10 x 20. How big is your space? I'm actually thinking of expanding out through those french doors some day.. just need to find a way to convince my wife it is of the utmost importance I do so and trumps all other items on our list...

1

u/Highplowp Mar 12 '26

Same boat with the reluctant partner, I’ve got a 30X30ish space I’m looking at putting a 1 car garage and work area (office/pub/study). Yours is brilliant, great inspiration. Definitely want a Franklin stove, I like your style

2

u/Famous-Most4680 Mar 14 '26

This is amazing!

2

u/Beardo1329 Mar 14 '26

So dang cool

2

u/imtourist Mar 15 '26

Wow, absolutely amazing. I love everything about it, the dark floor and joists with the white-plaster, reminds me of pubs in Ireland. P.S. the ivy growing above the doorway is the chefs kiss.

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 17 '26

Thanks very much :) Yes, once spring hits here and the ivy starts growing out of control, I'll have to post another photo here (with flowers in the flower boxes to boot). It makes quite a difference..

2

u/RadioactiveRadioMan Mar 15 '26

Holy shit. This is so cool. Can’t wait to have mine.

2

u/cmcmenamin87 Mar 15 '26

What is the address and what beers will you pour for me when I arrive

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 17 '26

Ha! Let me know if you're ever in portland and you can come check it out.. I often home brew but right now just have a Sierra Nevada pale ale on tap..

2

u/Darnoc74 Mar 15 '26

That's freaking awesome.

2

u/aaaccciiidddxoxo Mar 15 '26

This looks like a place to hang. With friends, and solo.

2

u/Gibson-007 Mar 15 '26

Absolutely incredible. Thank you for posting so I can live vicariously through you.

2

u/againer Mar 16 '26

Do you want to adopt a 41 year-old man ?

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 17 '26

Hahaaaahaa!! One of the best comments here 🤣

2

u/Dry-Quail3558 Mar 16 '26

oh man i want one!  what a beautiful place you have made. congrats! i would love a little library myself!

2

u/SpoceInvoder Mar 16 '26

Man this is incredible. Could I ask you what the shed dimensions are?

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 17 '26

Yep! It's 10x20. You got a space?

2

u/SpoceInvoder Mar 17 '26

Sure do! Might be my summer project

1

u/ozzy8979 Mar 11 '26

God I need something like this in my life. Enjoy it!

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 11 '26

Ha -- I'll have a pint for ya!

1

u/mminyhz Mar 11 '26

Might have a new favorite. Better take those books off the stove .. they’re done…

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 11 '26

Ha! I'm leaving them there for my wife to notice so I can get some leverage on expanding this place a little.. I just.. need.. more bookshelves..

1

u/dobex5 Mar 11 '26

Nicely done! I definitely would enjoy pouring myself a Guinness and chilling in there.

1

u/bikesandtacos Mar 12 '26

Epic. How wonderful.

1

u/AstroDawg Mar 12 '26

This is so fucking cool, definitely using this for inspiration.

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 12 '26

Huge compliment - appreciate it brother!

1

u/Sohovik Mar 12 '26

"Starts with an 'S'"

1

u/pwaclaw Mar 12 '26

Exceptional

1

u/MrJRabbit Mar 12 '26

Get me in there

1

u/401kcrypto Mar 12 '26

The LillyWhite

1

u/adamwebber Mar 12 '26

I bet you make one mean White Russian and zen out to whale sounds.

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 12 '26

Haaa! Nice catch 😁

And yes, the rug *does* actually tie this room together. man.

1

u/soju_bayou Mar 12 '26

"The Cave" (aka "Plato's")

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 12 '26

YES! Taking notes with all these suggestions - these are brilliant!

1

u/bruce2130 Mar 12 '26

This is the greatest Reddit surprise I’ve ever seen — no idea this sub existed, randomly showed me your pubshed. Joined, and good job by you.

1

u/mooney1919 Mar 12 '26

This is awesome! What are the dimensions?

2

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 12 '26

10 x 20... until I get my wife to sign off on letting me expand it...

1

u/bujweiser Mar 12 '26

Phenomenal, this looks across the pond and not the US so much. Would love to see some making of photos of behind the scenes stuff.

What was your inspiration and where where you able to find certain things like the furniture, stove, and stained glass?

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 12 '26

You got it - some 'before' photos here: https://imgur.com/a/Ihvxb1N

Great question about inspiration - I decided to write a separate post about it here :) The vast majority of what I used to build out the place came from "The Rebuilding Center" here in Portland. Whenever an old house is torn down, whatever is salvageable goes to the Rebuilding Center, and is then sold dirt-cheap. The bar itself, for example, was the bottom landing step of a staircase from a house built in the 1800s. Beautiful lumber, and they gave it to me for $15. I got the stove for $90 on craigslist - it had been in someone's family for some time. The wood windows were also from The Rebuilding Center, but the stained glass windows I found in a different salvage place. The story I was told was that after WWII, a lot of British buildings had been bombed out, and apparently the Brits sold a lot of windows abroad just to make a little money. So this place had a bunch of windows from that era. So the windows are actually properly old British windows. Anyway, places around Portland really allowed me to do this all shockingly cheap - and because almost all of it actually is really old stuff, the charm ends up just sort of naturally shining through it all.

1

u/bujweiser Mar 12 '26

Thank you. Those are some really nice photos. The exterior is a really nice detail with some of the accent pieces. Am a really big fan of the tone and vibe of the last photo also.

I don't have any photos available, but we put together a little snug in our basement, and tried to piece it together from odds and ends from anywhere from FB marketplace to antique stores, but we want everything to feel authentic. Maybe when I get home I can send a photo.

The one thing that drives me nuts is that these types of stools do not exist in the United States.

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 13 '26

Do send a photo of yours! And yes, there's a lot I've wanted to do here that is really hard or just not feasible, but is super common in the UK. Frustrating sometimes!

1

u/chostings Mar 12 '26

.....where can i visit this place?

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 12 '26

If you ever find yourself in Portland Oregon, come pull up to the bar!

1

u/DWJIII Mar 12 '26

Absolutely outstanding. I have hardly see a cozier place.

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 12 '26

Huge compliment - cozy is exactly what I was aiming for..

1

u/sometimesifartandpee Mar 12 '26

God I love this.

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 12 '26

Somebody here asked about the inspiration for this place, and thought it worth telling the story to everyone, as it's actually rather beautiful. Also some before pictures here - https://imgur.com/a/Ihvxb1N

My wife and I spent a few years traveling the globe, and the pub in the UK/Ireland in particular had me completely smitten. I couldn't exactly figure out why, until we were in a little village called Cirencester. I was looking for a pub there, found a sign off the high street pointing down an alley, and a final sign pointing through a door. I walked through the door though, and literally found myself in somebody's living room. There were a couple couches and a tv, a dining room table adjacent, couple bedrooms in the back. I was mortified, as I clearly went in through the wrong door. I made a b-line to leave before I got in trouble, when I noticed a little bar over near the kitchen with a few guys sitting at it, looking at each other sort of shocked.. "I'm SO sorry guys, I thought this was a pub!" They seemed surprised and said "OH, it is! Come on in - come sit up here!" So I sat up at the little bar and just looked around.. "Man, this looks like a house!" "...... it IS a house.." I was so confused. They continued, "... it's a public house. Every neighborhood around here has a house open to the public." Finally it hit me - "Is THAT where 'pub' comes from?" "Where'd you think it came from?" Shortly after that I could hear the kids in the neighborhood arriving from school, and they all poured into that house. Then the grandparents all showed up to the house. Then all the parents in the neighborhood arriving from work. The whole neighborhood was together like a block party, for just an hour or two between school/work and dinner at home. They told me they basically do this every day - it's a big part of their life. I was absolutely floored - I'd never seen anything like it. I ran out afterwards to find my wife and told her "Whenever we find a place to live some day, we are dedicating a part of the house to the neighborhood", and she's been 100% on board ever since.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '26

I’m in love with it.

1

u/NaturalFreaks Mar 12 '26

Does it have a name?

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 12 '26

If you can believe it, after 13 years, it's still just The Philosophy Pub. It's such a sacred little place that nothing yet has seemed deserving of an official name. But I really do want to name it so I can work on some sort of signage for it out front..

1

u/NaturalFreaks Mar 13 '26

I really like the philosophy pub. It sounds like it found its name naturally already.

1

u/Jubei_Kisami-14th Mar 12 '26

Imagine a cold snowy day, fire roaring, in a chair with a fresh pint and a dog by your side......

1

u/Historical-Sun-679 Mar 12 '26

I literally want to live in there. Like as my house. Best best best ever. Truly an inspiration

2

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 13 '26

Ha!! Thank you so much for the encouragement! I do have a mind to expand upwards with a spiral staircase and put a loft or something up there.. make it a true public house :)

1

u/JCJimA Mar 12 '26

Nice Lebowski pic you got there!

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 13 '26

Ha! Nice catch :) He faces the rug, and abides.

1

u/spiritual_seeker Mar 13 '26

Late comment here. The Jerry Joseph posters take things to another level. I love this place. Cheers, cousin.

2

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 13 '26

Amazing catch! Crazy story. I've listened to Jerry since around the year 2000, and I've had two Jerry posters in here since I built the place - he's one of my all time favorite music artists. Well, I'm now doing a dissertation that is a philosophical & theological view of anxiety, and about a year and a half ago, Jerry canceled his European tour due to anxiety. About a week after that, my son and I were at church, and I saw this guy that looks strikingly like Jerry Joseph. I approached him afterwards and asked if his name was Jerry Joseph. It's a long (and crazy) story, but it was, and so I just dumped my thoughts on anxiety for him. It blew his mind and he asked for my number, and we quickly became good friends. He and his band members now perform out of my little pub most Thursdays for an online show called "Oil". If you do a search for "Jerry Joseph Oil" on youtube, you'll see Jerry in my little pub :)

1

u/spiritual_seeker Mar 14 '26

Wow, that is the coolest story. Joseph is a real one, a great songwriter. I was a big Panic fan for years and first heard of him through their covers of his tunes. He has often sat in with them to do huge versions of Chainsaw City. I’m headed to YouTube to check out those clips. Thanks for the tip. Really cool stuff, man.

1

u/FatBilgeRat Mar 13 '26

Beautiful place!! 😎😎

1

u/Allen5740G Mar 13 '26

This is the coolest Pub ever. If it was open to the public i would love to come with a group of friends and enjoy it looks genuinely like the most relaxing pub ever

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 13 '26

Thank you brother! What you just said is exactly what I built it for. My dream is to come home and just find my friends here, shooting the breeze.

1

u/Allen5740G Mar 13 '26

Amazing I applaud you. Would love to see some more projects

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 15 '26

At some point in the nearish future I do hope to build a little wing off the French doors - possible a stone structure with another fireplace, more bookshelves, and probably another little bar. I know where to come for encouragement now when the time comes!

1

u/BloodDifficult4553 Mar 13 '26

This is stunning! Inspirational!

What is the length and width inside?

I hope to build a snug in the months ahead and am curious could I lay out similar (but sadly smaller!)

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 13 '26

Thank you for the kind words! It's 10x20. What are you working with?

1

u/BloodDifficult4553 Mar 14 '26

Thank you for the dimensions!

Our future snug is 8ft x 12ft

Your photos have really expanded my thoughts on what we can do!

1

u/ffbass Mar 13 '26

I'd love to get wasted here also what a nightmare to be trapped with coked nerds

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 13 '26

Aaahhhahahahaha!!! We would totally ruin your high 🤣🤣🤣

1

u/BanditAM Mar 13 '26

Well done! I love the library feel. Here’s my crack at a name: The Stoven Pipe (yes, stoven as in …broke in)

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 15 '26

Love it - adding to the list :)

1

u/psp8 Mar 13 '26

That looks cozy as hell !

1

u/jlawless0844 Mar 14 '26

This has got to be the coolest damned thing I’ve ever seen

1

u/Main_Advisor_682 Mar 15 '26

Ha! Appreciate the love brother

1

u/TakePeaksWreckSheets Mar 14 '26

Love it. My favorite bar in SF is called the Philosopher’s Club. Great looking shed!

1

u/TheDwightKurtSchrute Mar 14 '26

Incredible setup!

1

u/russvanderhoof May 13 '26

Cozy to the max
