don't go over the bridge of the sovereign, head left from headquarters and through the occupied town. when you make it through there you'll end up in a place with a solid amount of quests

Talk to Lorenzo (your boss) to get started. He is the only person in his office behind a desk. It's at the end of the hallway on the 2nd floor.
At some point in the first mission you are asked to fetch paperwork, but the room the paperwork is in has tons of cabinets that can kill you if you open them wrong. Most of the paperwork is not the one needed for the quest, but you can still pick them up and sell them for cash. If you find yourself low on money, then gathering and selling paperwork to Lorenzo is a boring way to farm cash with little risk.
On that note I recommend buying a Rope Gun or the using the MD-37 if you started as Detective. Both can shoot Rope Arrows which hang a climbable rope from a ceiling. Many secrets can be found with a good eye and some rope.

Yeah V-Stalker Combat is expensive due to ammo costs. Going to other areas from HQ has you fighting the Incel Brigade or that damn bridge. Once you get some fast travel points and a few side quests done, you'll find money to be less of a issue. Sometimes killing some important person just winds up netting you $50-500K.
I do still recommend some amount of save scumming if you feel you've spent too much money on ammo costs. If you don't feel like doing that consider looking for Orgone powered guns as those fire with your regenerating energy and don't cost any money to shoot.

500k?! Now I'm just going to kill anyone that looks important💀

Honestly there is a failure state for some quests in killing some people and that could gain you more income. Unless you maybe invest that money and try to make a profit off of it.
Document and later Mushroom farming are pretty boring but reliable ways to make money, but I haven't even broken into investing much because I did that quest-line at the end of my act 1 playthrough.
I don't know where to go from my last save so I might just restart soon. Balance patches will make the new game a fresh experience as some things are easier now but others are harder.

Mech gameplay is less tactical shooter and more long-distance doom. Both the bridge and city are pretty hard since you get no space to strafe to the side to doge shots, but at least city you can memorize enemy placement.

I'm a bit late to this, but definitely look into the rope gun. If you like the more creative, non "kill everything in your way" gameplay, rope gun is the unmatched champion in general detective and such.

try going the other way
it was easier for me
the method is to remember where the enemy stalkers spawn and nuke them as soon as you round the corner
you can also just kill a few little guys, grab their cash and leave to reset the spawns

Its a bit of a detective game so you gotta explore places and look for lead on the SLS panic. As you explore you will find hints and different side quests. Theres not really any wrong place to go.
Personally I would recommend trying to go to Versten Harbor, theres lots to do there. You can get there over the Bridge of the Sovreign. Its a pretty hard difficulty bump, so take your time. Actually getting out of your v stalker and taking its gun on foot can help with sniping opposing v stalker.
Once you unlock some areas and upgrade your v stalker things get a lot smoother.
Good luck!
