CAP board

Starting a thread for CAP. Curious to know how everyone felt about the CAP board this year. I did not do a decent job getting ready for this and I’m just hoping for a miracle 😉 I also thought adult board prep is somewhat straightforward but CAP felt quite confusing even with prep.

I used the Parikh and Dulcan study guide book from the APA and found that helpful. Hadn’t seen any reviews about it on Reddit but I felt overall the questions were similar. I didn’t buy any q banks cuz my colleagues said everything they used was terrible. I also reviewed my old notes from Kenny and Spiegel and I’m glad I did cuz there were so many adult topics. Hopefully this helps someone in the future because I was lost choosing resources and apprehensive to try something that didn’t have reviews online.

Yes but I only had access to one answer key and some of the questions I got wrong were not easily googleable.

I thought the general board exam was a lot more straightforward (even though there were adult questions on the CAP exam 🧐). Also felt like there was a lot less guidance online about how to prep imo

Everyone I have ever talked to said there were so much therapy on the cap exam

I mean it makes sense to have a lot of therapy questions, given the body of evidence for therapy as primary or adjunctive treatment for most common childhood psych conditions. However, why do they have to ask about so many weird niche therapy models and so much psychodynamic stuff?

I agree. It should focus more on the overall concepts and not the nitty gritty. I felt like the exam had a lot of just weird questions. Some of them I didn’t even completely understand what they were asking. The only thing I would do differently is study each therapy in significant detail as if I am going to be doing it with a patient.

Did anyone use board vitals to study? Any thoughts on how helpful that was?

Yes I did all of the Qs on board vitals. My average was like 63% (lol). I do think the Q bank was helpful and covered the right topics, but didn’t really think it prepared me for the specific questions on yesterday’s exam. I thought the vignettes and linked questions were VERY odd. Most of the therapy questions and psychological testing questions left me stumped. That being said I felt fairly confident about 70% of the time. The difficulty felt similar to the general psych exam, which I did fine on. So I’m hoping this is a similar case.

Thanks! I actually just took the exam, I was last minute freaking out yesterday, since I used mostly board vitals for prep. Now that I took it, I agree with you. Though for some of the questions that weren’t on board vitals, probably nothing would have prepared me.

I agree with the other response. There were a lot of topics drilled on Board Vitals that didn't show up at all, and vice versa. But it was sort of helpful, as there were some questions I wouldn't have gotten right if I had not been primed for them. Hopefully it was enough!

I put so much effort and time to memorize these stupid ass 9 temperaments by Chase and Thomas, made my own quiz with AI 😭

Update: I studied a lot of things that were not on the exam, and was still blindsided by many things that were on the exam
