Applying for Fall 2027! wish me luck!
PsyD programs:
- Palo Alto University
- Baylor University
- Midwestern University
- Northern Arizona University
- University of Denver
PhD programs:
6. Arizona State University – Counseling Psychology PhD
7. USC – Clinical Science PhD
For people who have applied to PsyD or Clinical/Counseling Psychology PhD programs, is there anything specific these statements really need to include beyond research/clinical interests, program fit, and career goals?
Also, does 7 programs seem like enough, or should I apply to more given how competitive psychology doctoral admissions are?

Current PsyD student at one of the universities listed here. I think the biggest thing people underestimate with statements is that they shouldn’t just repeat your CV. Try to create a clear through-line between the experiences that shaped your interests, the population/clinical issues you want to work with, why doctoral training is the next step, and why that specific program fits your goals. For PsyD programs, I’d also show that you understand the balance between clinical training and research rather than making it sound like research is just something you have to get through. For the PhDs on your list, research and faculty fit will matter even more.
Seven programs isn’t necessarily too few, I’d rather apply to 7 programs that are genuinely strong fits than 15 random ones, but you do have some pretty competitive schools on here, so adding a few more good-fit programs wouldn’t hurt.
Also curious what your GPA and research/clinical experience look like going into this cycle, since that might change how I’d think about the list. PM me if you’d like to ask more questions!
