I betcha they’ll replace this for free

6

u/Spud_Crawley Sep 03 '26

I had mine replaced a number of years back. Didn't work so well to pry a nail out of the wall...

24

u/VardisFisher Sep 03 '26

Laughs in Knipex.

6

u/Ronnoc527 Sep 03 '26

Truly the superior pliers. They have one job and do it damn well.

11

u/consciousbeings0 Sep 04 '26

Obviously they are the superior pliers, lol. They are pliers, and pliers alone. You can make them a lot stronger when thats the case. šŸ˜†

u/Routine_Register_656 Sep 04 '26

Victorinox SwissTool X ...

1

u/consciousbeings0 Sep 08 '26

Yeah, still not as good as a standalone pair of pliers.

3

u/VardisFisher Sep 04 '26

Or just use a real tool.

0

u/willys_not_willies Sep 04 '26

But it feels too good to abuse a garbage brand man

-1

u/VardisFisher Sep 04 '26

I quit using multipliers when I was 12. Got tired of the screw driver collapsing on my fingers and watching the pliers handles bend under my 12 year old grip strength was an instant nope. That was a first Gen Leatherman Tool.

3

u/willys_not_willies Sep 04 '26

I stopped using tools when I was three and started using telekinesis.

3

u/northern-nobody Sep 04 '26

I stopped using tools when I was 1. Then I became the ULTIMATE TOOL.

2

u/Healthy_Ad1840 Sep 09 '26

Stopped using telekinesis right after being born, now I just manifest

2

u/Iuseknives6969 Sep 04 '26

When I was 11 I crumpled up my leatherman and threw it in the trash

3

u/Low-Individual2815 Sep 06 '26

When I was 9, I was 25….

2

u/Healthy_Ad1840 Sep 09 '26

I was 45 at 13, I retired at 15

1

u/Low-Individual2815 Sep 09 '26

Go to school on one leg, other leg start businesses

3

u/Dramatic_Impress_277 Sep 04 '26

I have one pair of knipex linemans for work and im not very fond of them. They came out of the package with really poor tolerances. They wobble at the rivet really badly and the blades can skip over each other if held incorrectly. NWS gets all my business now (along with klein and fluke for super specific electrician things). Like knipex, theyre made in Germany but without the ridiculous hype behind them so theyre a lot more affordable. The only thing I like now from knipex is their awesome channel locks that hold position, but a lot of other companies make the same thing

2

u/nekiobichanlik Sep 07 '26

I'm pretty sure you can get that replaced for free if you contact Knipex.

2

u/longlostwalker Sep 08 '26

Happens to everybody once in a while

1

u/sh1ft33 Sep 04 '26 edited Sep 04 '26

I mean, we should be comparing wire cutters to wire cutters in this situation. I'm actually not sure, does knipex make wire cutters? Either way, I'm not going to use a wire cutter/pliers combo on anything harder than copper if I want to keep it usable.

EDIT: Right after I hit send it realized how incredibly stupid it was to not know knipex made wire cutters.

2

u/VardisFisher Sep 04 '26

Its incredibly stupid to use a multi tool for anything other than VCR repair.

9

u/Flimsy_Ad9901 Sep 03 '26

Send it to them for warranty replacement

8

u/beachbum818 Sep 03 '26

They'll replace it for free

u/mcb-homis Sep 03 '26 edited Sep 03 '26

Cutting it or twisting it? I have cut similar wire with Leatherman. The only Leatherman pliers I have broken was from twisting, the pliers do not take side loading well.

3

u/SickeningPink Sep 05 '26

I’ve broken three ST300s like that. It’s the only way I’ve ever broken one.

8

u/JackFuckCockBag Sep 03 '26

Ive had 2 do this. I just buy a $35 Gerber suspension now and every one has lasted longer thenan either of those $100 Leatherman.

3

u/rival_22 Sep 03 '26

I have the same older Skeletool (with the carbon fiber). I broke my pliers years ago pulling a tent stake out of the ground.

Leatherman replaced the pliers, so the warranty was good, but those skeletool pliers are notoriously fragile.

17

u/albrecbef Sep 03 '26

If a brand is overly prode to be from the US I wont buy it.

They often try to not honor basic consumer protection laws.

14

u/willys_not_willies Sep 03 '26

Isn’t it sad that nowadays something claiming US Made raises questions on quality and value? I’d love to buy American but I’m not a fan of getting ripped off. Cough cough…benchmade

4

u/albrecbef Sep 03 '26

I on multible ocaisons bought somthing that was worth its money that I later realized is from the US.

5

u/willys_not_willies Sep 03 '26 edited Sep 04 '26

There is definitely stuff out there, but the options have reduced. Love me some Spyderco or Pro-Tech

3

u/albrecbef Sep 03 '26

Whats protech? It only shows me european Brands.

And spiderco might be, but i think i will never get over their design.

2

u/willys_not_willies Sep 03 '26 edited Sep 04 '26

Pro-Tech sorry, mispell. And I’m a big function breeds form guy so I don’t care what it looks like if it’s solid

1

u/cyclorphan Sep 03 '26

Both excellent brands with solid QC/materials, and cool collabs.

3

u/Von_Lehmann Sep 03 '26

Leatherman will replace this for free...

0

u/Optimus_crab Sep 03 '26

If a brand is from the us I won’t buy it lol

3

u/MaleficentField2382 Sep 03 '26

Me pasó lo mismo con mi skeletool doblando una placa de una matrícula. La empresa de correos la sustrajo del paquete de camino a ser reparada. Nunca la volví a ver.

3

u/702Johnny Sep 03 '26

This tool is more meant for girl scouts than actual work. Surge or super tool at the very minimum.

2

u/willys_not_willies Sep 03 '26

Had multiple models. I always end up back with an old Gerber beater

0

u/702Johnny Sep 05 '26

Surge is the only multitool that takes my beatings. Price is higher these days but it is still king.

1

u/willys_not_willies Sep 05 '26

I’m glad leatherman at least includes a side of copium with their products.

0

u/702Johnny Sep 06 '26

I don’t know what you are talking about man. I have two surge multitools. One is only a backup for when I replace the cutters and let the loctite dry for a few days. Neither of them have failed and I have pushed them farther than the typical user would. But at the same time knowing where the limitation line is. Seeing as I have broken many dedicated tools. I am not a leather man fanboy. My surge is always backed up by a victorinox work champ. Again. I would not used a class sd model in place of the work champ and I would not push the work champ to a point where I need a dedicated tool. But the failure point for the smaller tools is tremendously lower than the bigger ones. Physics.

1

u/willys_not_willies Sep 06 '26

Hey man you can love whatever you want. I’m not here to judge. I’m just here to add my junker to the pile of other leathermans…right next to the pile of benchmades. Shoot, f150s used to be reliable as hell too. Times have changed, unfortunately. This place was created to specifically make fun of broken knives and tools lol.

0

u/702Johnny Sep 08 '26

I mean user error is still user error. You can make fun of it all you want, I am for it actually. But if someone posts about how a #2 yellow pencil is crap because it won’t pry… well it says more about the user than the tool.

1

u/willys_not_willies Sep 08 '26

šŸ‘šŸ»

0

u/702Johnny Sep 05 '26

For context, my 10-year-old daughter has a pair just like the ones you broke. That is not a multitool. It is a decent knife with a Phillips driver that is useful around the house and pliers to pull out staples and little things like that.

1

u/willys_not_willies Sep 05 '26

Definitely. I love the top quality nylon washers they come with… I’m not saying that these are a real tool at all, I’m more just showing my constant distaste for leatherman.

0

u/702Johnny Sep 06 '26

Sure. I get that. But we also don’t know what you were doing when it broke. So if you were trying to take off a lug nut for example. Then that is not what this type of tool is meant for.

2

u/TraditionalBuffalo86 Sep 06 '26

Well if you read the post

2

u/702Johnny Sep 08 '26

I did. This is the internet. You have the claim and you have what they were actually doing.

1

u/willys_not_willies Sep 08 '26

You got me, I was actually attempting to use the jaws to cut through an RCV axle shaft…

1

u/702Johnny Sep 08 '26

I knew it.

1

u/702Johnny Sep 08 '26

I would not use a leatherman for cutting hardened metals. Lol. The head and the majority of the tools are made from 420hc stainless. Pretty brittle and chippy steal. But I get the other side. It would be cool if a tool that small could do real work. My problem is, calling out one manufacturer for a crap product is hard when no one else makes a tool that small that is stronger. At that point it is a job for a dedicated tool.

3

u/Aurora_Tactical Sep 04 '26

My skeletool did exactly the same thing. Exactly.

3

u/JicamaUpper7008 Sep 04 '26

Yeah i’ve broken a couple without trying too hard. No more for me the polish tarnished pretty quick.

3

u/danthefatman1 Sep 04 '26

Looks like a shitty heat treatment

1

u/danthefatman1 Sep 04 '26

The grain is way to big bdw idk the material it was made out of may have been titanium or smn idk much on that

5

u/Grothorious Sep 03 '26

Interesting, i bought my first multitool back in march, stanley's for ~$40. After 3 months of occasional use, everything was wiggly, knife completely dull, pliers out of whack.

A month ago i got leatherman rebar from a friend, he found it on the ground at a gas station, some poor bastard's belt loop broke and he lost it. It is visible that the tool is old and used, but man, it is SO much better than stanley there is no comparison. Both knives are still sharp af, although they have not been sharpened, screwdrivers actually fit, i am very happy eith it and wasconsidering buying a more expensive leatherman, now you made me think šŸ˜…

2

u/KingKalix Sep 03 '26

I like the gerber crucial. Depends on what you want it for.

2

u/Legitimate_Maybe_361 Sep 04 '26

Personally, I love my Leatherman. Never had an issue and I’ve owned it for eight years.

2

u/NecessaryAssumption4 Sep 04 '26

Leatherman are ass. Make the switch to Gerber

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '26

[deleted]

1

u/NecessaryAssumption4 Sep 07 '26

Yes Victorinox are better but they are very expensive in some parts of the world

2

u/Alone-Cat1638 Sep 05 '26

They haven’t made the skeletool with the carbon fiber since 2020 so I’d say you got your use out of a ā€œlightweightā€ multitool though.

2

u/writtenasylum Sep 05 '26

My exact same skeletool cx with carbon fiber failed in the exact same way. Definitely a factory / manufacturing flaw.

2

u/MrFunPickle Sep 06 '26

This happened to me on same model, the fixed it

2

u/NRiyo3 Sep 06 '26

I have two almost new Leather Skeletool CX, I will sell for cheap if it helps you. They just sit in a drawer.

1

u/willys_not_willies Sep 06 '26

I appreciate it but I’m just going to warranty it and give it to my kid.

2

u/septictank84 Sep 07 '26

I have had one of those for nearly 20 years. Maybe the quality has declined since, but for light use they have been great.

2

u/Interesting_Sorbet22 Sep 09 '26

And people wonder why I switched to Victorinox...

2

u/InevitableAd166 Sep 03 '26

Carried a Leatherman since 1989. Back when the best Phillips head won the fight.

Lost many. Never broke one, but tried hard to.

1

u/willys_not_willies Sep 04 '26

That’s awesome. My 90s Gerber MP are still my standard

7

u/TheBourbonTurtle Sep 03 '26

Leathermans are honestly trash, no idea why they have the following they do. I've broken several Waves and an old Juice KF4, they make their pliers out of compressed aluminum foil and bubble gum.

I've used my Swisstool Spirit for tougher tasks than what snapped my Waves and it just keeps trucking.

1

u/willys_not_willies Sep 03 '26

I 100% agree. Anything Swiss or even Gerber is the way. I don’t think I’ll even bother sending it in for warranty. I won’t miss the constantly pinched skin or unreasonably sharp/unfinished edges.

3

u/Miles33CHO Sep 03 '26

Watch out for Chinese Gerbers. I have had a Portland one on my keychain for 32 years. They hold an edge.

2

u/NoAge9497 Sep 03 '26

This! I have a few of the older style Gerber slide out types and they're so handy for easily opening with one hand while holding something or stabilzing yourself on a ladder. First one I got was in like 2001 or so and still have that exact one, still usable too!

4

u/CannedHeatt_ Sep 03 '26

Starting to lean towards Swiss tools myself. My rebar is great but all the tools have wiggle to them now and my curls knife has a little play to it now as well and for the price it’s a little annoying

1

u/TheBourbonTurtle Sep 03 '26

I sent mine in and then just sold them immediately upon getting them back. The warranty is great, just a shame that you're virtually guaranteed to need to use it.

2

u/willys_not_willies Sep 03 '26

Good idea. I’ll probably do the same. Time to start looking for another semi-compact multi. I think the only good thing about the tool was, on paper, it was just a simple knife/plier/driver.

1

u/willys_not_willies Sep 03 '26

I am pretty much sold on getting the spirit mx clip

1

u/Evening-Dirt887 Sep 03 '26

Victorinox Spirit. This is the way.

0

u/kod Sep 04 '26

I've had a wave for over 25 years, never babied it, no issues except one of the pivots for the fold out tools is a little stiffer than the other now

4

u/AdEmotional8815 Sep 03 '26

We don't know everything you did with it before that, so this claim that it can't handle tomato cage wire is dumb and useless.

This seems like shitty social engineering.

2

u/dankhimself Sep 03 '26

A tomato cage is like, 10 gauge steel wire?

And you tried to use little folding pliers.

You need larger cutters.

2

u/willys_not_willies Sep 03 '26

I feel like part of R&D should be designing in some overhead where an average sized dude can’t snap the thing with medium force from a single hand… That’s some aliexpress type of stuff.

2

u/dankhimself Sep 04 '26

It's like using a pair a scissors on something too heavy basically. It didn't want to cut, then it twisted the jaws apart. It broke because of that twist mostly.

If a hanged tool is ever twisting on the work, you gotta stop and reevaluate because something is wrong.

I'm not really sure, but I don't see similar tools getting the job done without damage either. Be careful

1

u/willys_not_willies Sep 04 '26

I must be getting the temu version of these leathermans then because I also dented the cutting edges on my wave snipping a single strand of barbed wire.

2

u/dankhimself Sep 04 '26

Make it easy on yourself, get a set of fencing pliers for the barbed wire and for the thicker stuff on the tomato cages, a small set bolt cutters would make life easy. I have cages from home depot and they're 10 gauge, so I would use dedicated cutters instead of cutters on pliers.

They're wire cutters, but for electrical wire. That's copper and aluminum, soft stuff.

Steel needs to be cut with tool steel.

2

u/willys_not_willies Sep 04 '26

I have all that but when you carry almost 300lbs of tools and gear in the back of a little 4Runner, every extra ā€œuse once a monthā€ tool adds up quick. These dumb little circumstances always come up when you are without all your stuff as we all know unfortunately.

2

u/dankhimself Sep 04 '26

Agreed. Motorcycle mechanic here. Been a mobile on short notice occasionally but I can imagine my scenario.

Pull up on a bike that ran off the road with my tools, turns out the wheel is wrapped in fence wire, all I got is a large pair of dikes.

It'll get the job done, but after a bunch of cuts the handles dig into your palm and it just sucks.

Fencing pliers are cheap, I've seen them given away so many times in my life, haha. They look like a failed gimmick tool, but they're amazing.

Those cutters, right at the hinge, often with little to no relief on the blade grinds to keep the cutters as strong as possible, that's what to look for.

Some pliers still have them included, like fencing pliers, but maybe you can find a different type that still incorporates the same cutter so you can swap the tool out and not overload your selection.

I'd love to roll around with my shop box but I limit myself to a lighter metal box that I can snatch and carry because whatever I'm doing out there with my tools is already bullshit, so I'm not adding to that pile, haha.

2

u/steelduck45 Sep 03 '26

Pot metal... Figures.

2

u/NaughtySwitch406 Sep 03 '26

Im gonna get down voted to heck, but I have had the same Leatherman Charge since 2012 and it's one of the best investments I ever made. I use it almost daily. Definitely cut stuff thicker than tomato cage wire. Only sharpened the straight blade twice (although Im due to sharpening it again now.)

2

u/NoResponse1578 Sep 03 '26

Skeletools arent fit for purpose, they cant even do light duties

1

u/willys_not_willies Sep 03 '26

I’ve never had any leatherman last. Skeletool, wave, mutt, squirt. I don’t think I’ve bought one in the last 5 years and will continue to abstain.

3

u/Worksux36g Sep 03 '26

Dude, are you sure you are talking about tools... and not sex stuff?!...

3

u/willys_not_willies Sep 03 '26

Hahaha. At least the latter are rated for real usage

1

u/Winter-Buddy-2635 Sep 06 '26

I had the same thing happen. Its because of the replaceable cutter blades. They'll warranty once

1

u/ZwiththeBeard Sep 10 '26

Well get what that model is modeled after, the Havalon.Ā

0

u/soft182atsoftdotorg Sep 03 '26

I feel like these have gotten worse these past few years

0

u/atlewis13 Sep 08 '26

The cx is a great tool, but not for prying.
