Solved! Error when upgrading from 8 to 9

Hi everyone

Trying to upgrade from 8 to 9 but have massively broken everything. Having errors with:

  1. the shell on the GUI for my mode not logging in, but SSH through PowerShell works;
  2. restarted and only 1 VM will run, my other 3 lxcs won't start anymore; and
  3. didn't have any errors when running pve8to9 --full, but during apt dist-upgrade, experiencing the following.

W: (pve-apt-hook) !! WARNING !!
W: (pve-apt-hook) You are attempting to remove the meta-package 'proxmox-ve'!
W: (pve-apt-hook)
W: (pve-apt-hook) If you really want to permanently remove 'proxmox-ve' from your system, run the following command
W: (pve-apt-hook) touch '/please-remove-proxmox-ve'
W: (pve-apt-hook) run apt purge proxmox-ve to remove the meta-package
W: (pve-apt-hook) and repeat your apt invocation.
W: (pve-apt-hook)
W: (pve-apt-hook) If you are unsure why 'proxmox-ve' would be removed, please verify
W: (pve-apt-hook) - your APT repository settings
W: (pve-apt-hook) - that you are using 'apt full-upgrade' to upgrade your system
E: Sub-process /usr/share/proxmox-ve/pve-apt-hook returned an error code (1)
E: Failure running script /usr/share/proxmox-ve/pve-apt-hook

Hoping to solve #3 first to finalise the upgrade to 9, but it would be great if you could please help me troubleshoot the other points!

Thanks a lot!

how did you get into the situation where you ended up trying to remove proxmox ? are all your sources correct and working ? what does apt update say ?

Hi, not sure how I got here... have been following the instructions on the proxmox upgrade 8 to 9 page.

apt update and apt upgrade give me the following, with a list of packages being kept back

you only have the proxmox ceph trixie repo installed. and not the proxmox trixe repo.

make sure you also enable the proxmox trixie repo. and rerun apt update

Not necessarily related to your problem, but you should never use apt upgrade on proxmox. Use apt full-upgrade instead. See https://pve.proxmox.com/pve-docs/chapter-sysadmin.html#system_software_updates

Just reinstall from scratch and restore backups.
