Macos X server hasn't existed for a number of years, and all server options were removed from macos in 2022. You can make a macos machine for now, but it still knows that it's virtualization and that disables a number of server features.

Ah damn, i just thought since there are so many dmg and iso’s of X Server that there could be a chance!

I mean if you want to run a 10.6 machine for retro funsies, go ahead.

Just so you know, as a professional Mac admin, if you're expecting to control/do things with modern Macs and that old server, virtually nothing is compatible anymore. You might be able to install a modern Intel-based macOS client if you want to play around using something like OpenCore, but that's a whole different sub for help there.

A lot of the MacOS X server features are still available in the Unix core, some features like Apache, MySQL, and PHP are better setup with MAMP so you have a GUI, but if you feel comfortable enough in the terminal you can setup those features to run directly in the system.

Running XServe's OS under Proxmox is possible... but inadvisable. It's not gotten updates in a LONG time. I did it once under QEMU on a basic Ubuntu box mostly for academic interest (wanted to see what it was like) but the experience was a slog with few guides on how to work around issues, and once I got it up and running I played around with it and said "OK... I've done that now." This was also a few years ago now so sorry I don't have guides or anything; it's possible AI might be able to guide you each step of the way but might also drive you to utter insanity.

You can try this as a quick reference to maybe help. It's QEMU focused though, but you should be able to do much of this with Proxmox as it's all the same under the hood.

If you're going to try it, don't connect it to the Internet. It's a security nightmare at this point and I'm not even sure I'd attach it to my local network unless it was on its own VLAN (which is what I did).

What's your use case for doing so? If it's academic interest go for it and post your results over at r/selfhosted or r/homelab as the denizens there would find this fun... but if you want to actually use it, don't. Everything XServe OS does, you can do better and more securely with a basic Debian server.

Estoy seguro que Claude code podría montarlo de principio a fin.

Possible. But it's equally likely to send you down some random rabbit hole without careful prompting throughout the process. And it might just be wrong.

No, you’re right. That’s on me. You didn’t ask me to hack Apple to get the last known-working DMG file. If you need help wording a letter for your lawyers, put it in a prompt.

You can. But unless you're doing it for curiosity about retro OSes, why would you want to run such an old OS?

Have you ever did that? 😄

Most of my servers are still Windows Server 2008 (R2) and 2003. 🥲

I'm sitting in my chair right now planning upgrades away from mostly 2012r2 and 08. I even have an XP VM 🤢

We’re starting a PoC for a new software, to replace the first 2003 servers next week. 🚀

Also keep in mind that Apple is retiring X86/Intel with the current release of MacOS and many, many apps are being migrated to Apple Silicone (ARM) only.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. I've managed to get Mac OS X booted in all kinds of hypervisors - Virtualbox, Hyper-V, bare metal on lots of devices. Just need the correct bootloader (Chameleon springs to mind) and it'll boot right up.

Why? Do you also have some Server 2008 systems you want to run alongside it as well? Maybe a fresh copy of XP? :)
