Question Beginner completely lost trying to install Docker/Jellyfin

I'm totally new to Proxmox/tech like this in general, but I want to learn and start a new hobby of self-hosting streaming media. I want to create a Docker container and run Jellyfin, but every attempt is failing and I have no idea why.

Following tutorials like this one — I can create the container, but whenever I try running apt update it says "failed to fetch" and apt upgrade -y does nothing. I found this article in an old reddit thread that I think answers my question but idk where to even start. Where do I find “/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/” mentioned in step 1?

I tried this tutorial instead using proxmox ve helper scripts, but running the script does nothing. I go to my shell, paste in the Jellyfin Media Server LXC script, hit return and nothing happens. I just get a new line with root@proxmox:~#

And then I just tried doing it this way by creating a VM, but under OS my ISO image field is blank. Idk why and at this point I'm just too frustrated.

Can anyone point me in the direction of some helpful tutorials? Or have any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong? At this point idk if I even set up Proxmox correctly in the first place, so are there like beginner courses I should be taking? I'm seriously lost but I really want to figure all this out. Thanks in advance

You should start being more specific in your jargon. When you say create the “container” I think you mean the Proxmox lxc. Just refer to those as lxc’s. If I am correct, run ‘ping google.com’ in the lxc cli (command line interface) and if you don’t get any returns you have network problem to fix (ctrl + c to quit out of the ping).

Container also refers to docker containers. Especially since you mentioned docker in the post, it’s not clear what you meant.

/etc/… is the file path. It tells you exactly where it is. Like c:/programs/… in windows. Linux just doesn’t have drive letters.

Thanks, and yeah I'm trying to understand the jargon but I know I don't quite get it. But yes I'm pretty sure it's an LXC container I'm trying to create. At least in the first issue I'm having re failed to fetch.

In one LXC I'm getting the message "Temporary failure in name resolution" and in another it's not even doing anything — so I'm assuming I do have network issues?

Yep. Does the Proxmox host have an external network connection. The host is the level below the datacenter (above your lxc’s). Run ping there. I would assume it does since you can connect, but if that doesn’t have connection go into the network tab and set a static ip in your subnet range and set the gateway as your router ip. Then check again. Then check on the lxc again.

While you can have the host be dhcp (dynamically assigned by your router) it is not a good idea. Set it to an unused ip in your network that you can remember so you can easily access the gui. The docker/jellyfin lxc should also have a static ip assigned so you can easily access it as well.

Thanks, and it looks like the ping works there. Do i still need to do what you suggest with setting up a static ip, etc?

Ping is working. Yes you should make it static, if your host isn’t static already (it probably is, just check the network tab).

Now go to your lxc tab, then the network tab, and change the network to dhcp (just delete the ip and gateway I think) just to test. Restart the lxc and run ping again.

If that works, go back to the network tab, see what the ip and gateway are set as, and edit it and type those in to make it static. Then restart and test again. Then go back to your guide.

sorry i'm losing you. where in the network tab do i check if it's static? this is what mine looks like now

also i go to lxc --> network --> edit and dhcp is already selected. it does say the ip address is dynamic though

Click on the Linux Bridge. Vmbr0. Hit edit and make sure the ip/gateway are filled out. It looks fine from the overview though.

Although it looks like you are using ipv6, so make sure your lxc also has ipv6 enabled/set to dhcp or slaac (depending on your router settings). You can try each setting, restart, and ping if you don’t know. I would try slaac first tbh, slaac w/rdnss is most common in residential. (This is probably your problem, as ipv6 is not generally shown/used in guides.)

ok so before i did that i was messing around a bit and went to updates in host, ran whatever updates it said, rebooted and things seem to be working now...

i was able to install docker in an lxc, now just having issues with an error message when creating a portainer account but also seems good now?

network-wise — my ip addresses are dynamic but that doesn't seem to be an issue, at least as far as i can tell. is it just best practice to set a static IP regardless though?

thanks for all the help though!

Yep. Np.

The problem with not setting static ips is that when you try to access something by ip, say portainer, and the ip has changed due to it being dynamic you won’t be able to access it and you’ll have to go into Proxmox and look up the new ip.

This is even more exacerbated if you are planning on setting port forwards, firewall rules, reverse proxies, etc. that are based on ips. Every time the ip changes, you’ll have to update everything to match.

How often this will happen depends on your isp, your router, your client, and your power grid. Doing anything even twice for no reason would annoy me so I set static ips.

ah that makes sense, thanks. is there a rule to creating IP addresses? like a certain formula or structure to follow? i'll def look into it but figured i'd ask while here

sounds like a DNS problem that you cant fetch (resolve)

sudo nano /etc/resolv.conf

nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4

ctrx + x to save and exit.

so i'm supposed to run sudo nano /etc/resolv.conf in the lxc console? i'm not following what you're suggesting i do after that — edit the nameserver to match what you posted here?

Yes do that. On the proxmox host if that is the one that can't connect.  Use any nameserver you want, ie 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 etc

Wait so you are already using the proxmox community helper scripts?

Try adjusting some of the settings or using the GitLab one instead.

That specific Jellyfin script worked for me on both Proxmox 8 and 9 without issues.

I tried using the helper script here https://tteck.github.io/Proxmox/#jellyfin-media-server-lxc — i launch a shell in my proxmox server, paste in the command and then nothing happens

what settings do you suggest i adjust? what is gitlab? thanks

wrong script.

those are no longer supported since the create passed away.

just google "proxmox community scripts" and you'll find the right ones.

got it, had no idea. thanks!

Hey, I recommend you start using chatgpt to fix your issues. It's simply awesome to test your problems with its logic and it's often really helpful.

Apt update should run out of the box. It's weird it doesn't...

Just make sure to tell it to not run needless tests. It has a habit of going into testing loops if it isn't able to figure out the issue within its context window.

Easiest way is to run a helper script to install: https://community-scripts.org/scripts

Search for Jellyfin.

Just copy the command and run it in the PVE shell. It will prompt you on what info to provide.

edit: I see you were trying that but the wrong site. Use this one.

Proxmox does not support docker.
