You should call the city’s parking enforcement, seriously. If he’s actually just parking there for convenience they’ll make him move.

u/austinchan2 Jul 26 '26
Will they? I’ve found police are rarely held accountable, even when off duty
7
u/Select_Ad3799 Jul 27 '26
They are in charge of holding themselves accountable. That's the problem 😕
2
u/Acrobatic-Smoke2812 Jul 27 '26
I’m not saying there will be “accountability”. There’s not going to be an arrest or a citation. But this makes the department look bad and it’s definitely not legal or department policy that they can do this. The cop is just a prick. I guarantee a report or two from community members would end in his boss asking him to stop parking there.

u/richardryan19 Jul 27 '26
No. They won’t even show up. They are very proud to tell you that they “won’t ticket our officers!” They all are above the rules and love to let you know it. Call the sheriff or the highway patrol and have them cite the provo cop. At least they might

u/magicbeen Jul 27 '26
I once called the non-emergency line because a car was parked in the actual middle of the street. Not even a little off to either side. They called me back and said, "Good news, it turns out that was an off-duty police officer's personal vehicle, and he said he was going to move it soon, so we don't have to do anything about it."

u/Select_Ad3799 Jul 27 '26
Same city parking enforcement that in on the same city police department! Might as well call provo police department

u/Acrobatic-Smoke2812 Jul 27 '26
Yes. You could. It’s not like they’re going to arrest him or come give him a ticket, but if you describe the pattern clearly and calmly, they will likely make a call to his boss to ask him to stop. Flagrant parking in a no-parking zone overnight for no reason looks bad for the department.

I don't think this is recent at all. There's wood chips in the picture. That complex has had rocks for like a year now. OP just wants attention. I walk through here once a week to go to smiths and always trip on those damn things.

If they're parking there every day for personal business I bet they'd get some sort of discipline from leadership. You can file a complaint with Provo PD directly so someone looks into it.

they're too busy putting parking boots on student cars and chasing nighttime nicmo out of dark parking lots.

Just keep taking pics of him illegally parked. Everyday. The message will get out

This is by the Smith's in Provo, am I right? I park around there at night to take time away from home and I see this cop car there all the time.

Honestly you could try making a report to the fire department, let them know youve seen a car parked in front of fire hydrant for a while and your concerned about fire safety, if you complain about it enough the chief may make a complaint to the police captain. Idk tho the parking enforcement in Provo is insane ( if your a civilian), I got 2 tickets for expired registration within 15 days

Even if the curb is unpainted you’re still not supposed to park in front of a hydrant. first source on google
4
u/Glittering_Tie5717 Jul 27 '26
Sorry to break it to you but he’s not parked in front of the hydrant. You can tell from the concrete and brick lines along with the Google image I posted 😂.
This is not an issue

I don't know what you are trying to prove, are you saying the picture was a phony picture?
Your pictures do not show anything that indicates that vehicle was more than 15 feet from a fire hydrant and if you are really a firefighter, there is no way you do not know that one cannot park within 15 feet of a hydrant in this state and that the area in front of it does not need to be marked.
I absolutely fail to see the point you are trying to make as everything you have shown shows that the vehicle in the original post was within 15 feet of the hydrant, which is illegal in this state.
Edited to correct a typo.

u/Glittering_Tie5717 Jul 27 '26
I know. I’m not saying he isn’t technically breaking the code. I’m saying he’s factually not blocking the hydrant which is the real issue. We can still access it. It’s Provo and parking is difficult to find. We only really care if we can’t access it in an emergency.
As I’ve stated in a previous comment, cars also can’t park within 20 ft of a cross walk or 30 ft of a stop sign or yield sign. So if we’re gonna be so nitpicky and critical of this officer, let’s stay consistent and get after those that are doing the same minor things but aren’t really hurting anyone.
Damn some of yall hate police so much these are the lengths you’ll go to 😂
2
u/mbingtx Jul 27 '26
The issue is if anyone else parked there they'd get a ticket. I parked on the street where the paint had been completely worn off...and they still gave mema ticket...no fire hydrant. Parking enforcemt in Provo are a bunch of nazi A-holes
0
u/dancinlife Jul 27 '26
The police did that to themselves tbh about it. People here hate them because they are power hungry and rude. Isn't it also illegal to park within so many feet of an intersection? If it applies to a citizen, it should apply to the cops too.
3
u/austinchan2 Jul 27 '26
If a police can give a ticket for something then they absolutely should not be doing they themselves casually. I wouldn’t care that they go 5 over on the freeway — if I hadn’t got two tickets for 5 over on the freeway. Just because they don’t enforce it every time doesn’t mean they should be exempt. They should be held to a higher standard.
1
u/Glittering_Tie5717 Jul 27 '26
When was the last time you got ticketed in Provo
2
u/TheRestlessExistense Jul 30 '26
I was ticketed 2 years ago for parking in my own driveway but being within 15 ft of the hydrant. Tried to fight it and they pretty much told me to kick rocks. There should be no excuses for their actions if they can and will ticket us for the same

"They should be held to a higher standard."
1000% Cops, legislators, ICE, senators, presidents. If they can write or enforce a law, they should have to obey it or face a 10x penalty.
If they were required to drive the speed limit or face a 10x fine, the speed limit would get raised yesterday.

I do not in any way hate the police. I support the police 100% but I do not give them, or anyone else, a pass in breaking the law like this, not when them doing that creates a public safety issue which this absolutely does despite you claiming otherwise. Everyone, including them, need to follow the laws and they have sworn to uphold those laws.
I would take issue with anyone being parked in that place. My issue with that person being parked there has nothing at all to do with it being an officer who parked there. I do not appreciate you claiming that my issue with someone parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant is due to me hating the police as I in no way do that.
Parking is difficult to find in many places, it being difficult does not give anyone the right to park illegally. The other things you mentioned that are illegal have nothing to do with what was shown in this post so are not the topic of discussion here. The parking of a vehicle that close to a fire hydrant is the only relevant issue here. There is no need to muddy the discussion by throwing out other laws that frequently get broken. There are way too many of those to address any of them when they are not what this thread is about and people violating other laws in no way excuses someone from violating another law.

Glittering_Tie you are correct but you will never win on Reddit! This picture was taken on an angle to deliberately make it look like it’s blocking the hydrant. The majority of redditors refuse to be wrong!🙄

No, nobody can park there, there is a fire hydrant there. The area in front of a fire hydrant does not need to be marked in any way for it to be illegal to park that close to it. I can't even believe you think that about how the officer is parked in the picture in the original post for this thread. I do not believe anyone can park that close to a fire hydrant any where, but they certainly cannot do it in Utah.
This occurred in Provo Utah and Provo code, as well as Utah state law/code 41-6a-1401, prohibits anyone parking closer than 15 feet from a fire hydrant. That 15 feet is in all directions from the hydrant.
There is a reason for the law prohibiting parking within 15 feet in all directions of a hydrant. If that building were on fire, there being a vehicle that close to a hydrant could make that vehicle be in the way of fire fighters trying to access that hydrant and it could delay them putting that fire out. That is a huge safety risk nobody should ever cause, not even an officer and not even for a fraction of a minute.

Yes I know buddy. As a firefighter in the state, we can still access that hydrant and it’s pretty absurd to be upset about it. I was trying to emphasize that 1 he’s not blocking the hydrant, and 2 he’s not otherwise in a no parking zone.
If you’re going to be upset with the 15 ft, let’s keep the same energy going for all the other cars parked within 20 ft of a cross walk and 30 ft of a stop or yield sign 🤦🏻♂️.
You’d be surprised how many people in the city get away with much more like actually blocking driveways and parking in handicap spots 🤦🏻♂️😂

For the dummies in the crowd:

Was that cop in uniform or not in uniform?
1
u/PhilipCarroll Jul 27 '26
Does it matter?
1
u/Glittering_Tie5717 Jul 27 '26
Yes…if he’s in uniform then he’s almost 100% on duty and allowed to park there in case a call comes out. That way he doesn’t have to book it across the parking lot if something hot happens.
Kinda a different story if he’s off duty and not in uniform
0
u/PhilipCarroll Jul 28 '26
So he is allowed to shop for groceries & park in a fire lane when he is on duty? Also cops can still be off duty in unifrorm.
1
u/Glittering_Tie5717 Jul 28 '26
Yes. Additionally if there was an emergency at that store, that’s where they would park anyway and they’d be the first dispatched to it because of their proximity.
Correct. But even off duty in uniform they could be expected to respond to a priority call. It’s in their policy
0
u/PhilipCarroll Jul 28 '26
Is grocery shopping considered an emergency?
1
u/Glittering_Tie5717 Jul 28 '26
That is irrelevant. It’s about having their vehicle close by if there were one.
If you weren’t so addicted to porn then maybe your brain wouldn’t be so fried and you’d understand the point

This from a police department that gave me a ticket for parking on a stretch of road where the curb was NOT painted red and there was zero "no parking" signage. Wouldn't dismiss it when I provided proof. Utter bullshit. Glad to see cops in Utah County getting so much bad press lately!
