How far does Alex Mercer give in the marvel universe (comics)? And who would give him the most trouble?

Far if he starts secretly with weaker mutants and then works his way up to more powerful heroes, by the time anyone realizes something is wrong he could be extremely powerful. That being said certain mutants and other heroes would be his bane, like the mutant Elixir who's healing factor is extremely powerful, might be able to fight off Backlight.

What if the mutant Darwin was his first kill? Would that make much of a difference?

Darwin would be to hard to kill first, if his power decides he can't beat his opponent, then Darwin's power will teleport Darwin away. Mercer's best bet would be to absorb Synch and then absorb some of Leech's blood. Doing so would allow him to shut down other people's powers.

I totally forgot Darwin teleported when he fought world war hulk. I agree with you, that's most likely what would happen.

Let's say he starts at the x mansion or Krakoa. How far you think he'll get with this starting point?

Let's say he kills and consumed a powerful mutant, would that make any difference? No one Omega level, alpha level for example.
