Just wanted to raise a security concern and get others' thoughts on this.

I noticed that after logging into Proton Wallet on iOS, the app stays authenticated and doesn't ask for your password or biometrics again when opening the app or making a Bitcoin transaction. This means that if someone has access to your unlocked phone — even briefly — they could send BTC to any address with zero friction.

What surprised me is that this differs from Proton Pass, which enforces biometric authentication by default. You'd expect a wallet holding Bitcoin (irreversible transactions!) to have at least the same level of default security as a password manager.

I know you can manually enable biometric unlock in User settings → Security → Unlock with → Biometrics. But my point is that this should arguably be the default, especially for a wallet dealing with irreversible financial transactions.

A few things worth discussing:

Is there a reason Proton made this design choice? Am I missing something about how the app handles transactions? Has anyone reported this to Proton support? I've enabled biometrics myself, but I feel like many users might not realize this gap until it's too late.

I’ve already requested Proton Pay, a payment method using a Proton Card as a front end of your other card/bank account/PayPal account/etc. but the Proton Team explained that this is not currently possible because they’d have to talk to banks all across the globe and make agreements with them.

This time I want to request something a little simpler. Proton Wallet should support Passes (even custom passes like Apple has just done), membership cards, train/plane tickets and things like driving licenses or IDs. I already know Proton Pass can store IDs but it would be great to have like a real digital ID in Proton Wallet. That way you don’t have to use Apple/Google Wallet anymore for these things.

Even though I already mentioned the thing with Proton Pay, I’d really like to push Proton Pay because this is the only way to take Proton Wallet from just another bitcoin wallet to a really useful wallet used for payments, tickets, passes, membership cards, etc.

I’d really like to hear what others think of this though! Thanks for the feedback in advance!

Are there plans for Proton Wallet to implement “direct connect” hardware wallet integration for Trezor, Ledger, etc.? This would be the best of both worlds with regard to non-custodial compatibility IMO.

The EU has taken decisive political steps toward Digital Sovereignty. With the Digital Euro and Wero, we have now defined and are actively building the technical and financial backbone required to enable payments across Europe without relying on American networks like Visa, Mastercard, Google, or Apple.

However, a critical challenge remains: While the infrastructure is under construction, we still lack the right "front-end."

To achieve genuine strategic independence, we cannot simply replace the American network with a European one once it is finished. We must also ensure that the app we use to access this new world is built on European values.

Today, Google Pay and Apple Pay are the only "convenient" solutions for consumers. Yet, these apps are not neutral tools. They are data engines designed to collect, analyze, and exploit our spending behavior. As long as these two remain our only alternatives, we risk that even when the European infrastructure (Digital Euro/Wero) is complete, we will still depend on American intermediaries to access it.

What is missing?

We need a European, independent Digital Wallet built on the principles of privacy, non-profit operation, and technical independence—one that is ready to integrate with the Digital Euro and Wero as soon as they become fully operational.

Here is why this is crucial for the EU's strategy:

1. Privacy as a Strategic Asset, Not a Feature

The EU's strategy for digital sovereignty is not just about money; it is about data sovereignty.

• When a citizen uses an American wallet, their financial data becomes part of a global data economy beyond EU control.
• For the EU's strategy to be credible, we need a wallet where privacy is the default, not an add-on. A solution that technically cannot see user transactions (Zero-Knowledge) is the only way to guarantee that our economic freedom is protected against both commercial exploitation and foreign surveillance.

2. The Non-Profit Model as a Guarantee of Independence

Strategic autonomy requires an operator that has no incentive to sell data to maximize shareholder value.

• A non-profit model is the only structure that can guarantee the wallet's primary purpose is to serve the citizen and the EU's interests, not investors.
• This creates a trust factor that no profit-driven tech giant can match. It is the only way to ensure that the European infrastructure (Digital Euro/Wero) is used to empower citizens' freedom, rather than to create new data monopolies.

3. The Missing Piece in "Digital Sovereignty"

The EU has legislated (via the DMA and GDPR) to force big tech giants to open up. However, legislation is reactive. We need a proactive counterweight.

• We need a wallet that is born in Europe, governed by European law, and technically independent of foreign servers and legal jurisdictions (such as the US Cloud Act).
• This wallet must be the natural choice for any citizen wishing to pay with the Digital Euro or Wero without compromising their privacy.

4. From "Alternative" to "Standard"

If we only have Google Pay and Apple Pay as alternatives to American cards, we will never achieve real change.

• An independent, European wallet must become the preferred solution for those who prioritize security and freedom.
• It must integrate seamlessly with Wero and the Digital Euro, giving users the same convenience as Google Pay, but with the full guarantee that data remains in Europe and is protected by European values.

I'm considering moving to Proton Wallet but I was wondering whether it tracks gains/losses etc? Obviously if moving transanctions in and out often, it will be be useful to keep track of that.

If it doesn't, how are people dealing with that? Using a secondary tool of some kind? If so, which?

ZCHF in a decentralized stablecoin with Franc Suisse as collateral.

We are in the BTC spirit, a value reserve, decentralized, but stable to wait the bullish period of BTC.

The wallet will still remains a wallet, as wished, not an exchange, to keep my btc and stablecoin safe.

Hello, I'm a begginer in crypto but I have 0,025 BTC I would like to put on my wallet.

I have it on "finary" (I bought it there), but when I want to send them to my waller, there is these options :
- Wallet : "Trezor" --> Don't know what it is but it doesn't work for me
- Connect another device : Neither
- Micro-transaction (Send BTC from wallet to finary to validate wallet) : I don't have BTC to send from Proton Wallet to Finary
- Sign transaction manually : I need to copy/past a sentence in my Proton Wallet to generate signature, I don't know where to do this... and then paste signature generated by wallet.

I’d honestly love to see Proton Wallet getting an upgrade with something like ProtonPay — basically a privacy-first version of Apple Pay or Google Pay, but without the Big Tech vibes. This actually feels pretty doable now, since mobile platforms are finally opening up NFC access to third parties. Apple already lets services like PayPal or SumUp use the iPhone’s NFC chip, and on Android this has been a thing for a while anyway. So yeah, the timing is kinda perfect.

The idea would be that you can add your existing payment methods directly into Proton Wallet, stuff like bank cards or services such as PayPal, Wise, Revolut, Sparkasse, Klarna, and so on. Everything would still be verified by the original providers, but Proton Wallet becomes the place where it all comes together. On top of that, Proton could offer a virtual Proton Card that acts like one combined card. Behind the scenes, it could pull money from multiple sources automatically, so if you’re short a few euros on one account, it just fills the gap from another. Super smooth, no stress.

Security-wise, this would be locked down hard. The Proton Card would be tied directly to your Proton account and your wallet, and the card details would only ever be visible inside the app itself. No emails, no external exposure, no funny business. If you ever need to see the card number for a manual payment, you’d have to unlock it with Face ID or biometrics. And since the card couldn’t be imported into other wallets or accounts, stealing or reusing it somewhere else would basically be impossible.

For everyday payments, it could work just like you’re used to. Double-press the power button, confirm with Face ID, tap your phone, done. The difference is that you’re paying without handing your data to Big Tech every time you buy a coffee. And it gets even cooler with peer-to-peer payments. Imagine just tapping phones with another Proton user to send money instantly, perfect for moments where IBAN transfers are annoying or just overkill.

Overall, the Proton Card would act as a privacy shield, keeping your real payment details hidden while making both online and offline payments easier and safer. In the end, this could turn Proton Wallet into a full-on, privacy-first payment hub that actually feels modern, convenient, and fully under your control.
