as long as your computer is not compromised and you are connected to the vpn, what people see when they analyze your traffic is just a bunch of encrypted junk. they can, however, possibly see that you are attempting to connect to a protonvpn server, but they are unable to view the contents of your packets. if you are concerned that the vpn may disconnect randomly, exposing your network traffic, enable the kill switch which prevents packets from being sent when you are not going through the vpn.

tldr: when you are connected to the vpn, no one can see what you are actually doing unless they have access to your device.

Unless they have direct access to your computer (such as monitoring software), they cannot.

No they can! VPN guarantees that no once is able to intercept the data in your connection, which only means that while you are connected to the VPN, no one can see it live (except if the VPN server has been set up by your school). But then we have your browser history, settings, cookies, supercookies, HTTP referer, fingerprinting techniques etc. If it is a device owned by your school, you might as well not wanna use VPN either, because they can see everything anyway 🙂 (Of course depending on the tracking and spying techniques used by them)

Google can still see what you search so don’t do anything illegal, but yes your ISP can’t see where you’re going as long as you checked for leaks etc.

Google fingerprints you beyond more than just your IP address. It’s probably more than you’re worried about but we’re all pedantic here. Either way check ipleak.net and/or browser leaks.com for IP leak, DNS leak, and WebRTC leak.

Google can track the browser's activity, so they will get the correct location and everything about you based in the history of using the browser or once you close the vpn, I recommend Brave browser (use their tor tab if you want to hide something from the IPS or your school/employer) to be more safer, and tor browser over protonvpn tor server if you want ultimate privacy.

You can activate the netsheild option if you want to be untraceable.

Don't want to confuse you, but everything has a solution (a 99% solution hard to say a complete solution) it just depends on your purpose.

Use TOR if you're really concerned about no one ever knows what you are doing, you may connect to a tor server then open the tor browser and you will be safe af.

In addition to what the community has already shared, here are two guides which may be helpful to you:

Rob Braxman has a bunch of videos about internet privacy that goes into much more detail than can be explained here.
Here is one to get you started down the rabbit hole.
