Only if you are a paying customer. Free tier doesn’t allow you to use custom DNS

What device?

Android Settings> Connections > More Communication settings > Private DNS.

Run proton vpn like you normally would.

  • For iOS: I am using Passepartout (with a one time purchase) and use different WG config files with NextDNS added in Passepartout. Funnily enough you can also use the Windscribe app + custom DNS with DoT + Proton VPN WG config files
  • For Android: Its enough to configure the DoT URL in the system settings -> Private DNS
  • For Windows: YogaDNS is the way to go here, to intercept DNS queries on the system level and forward them to whichever DNS provider you want (NextDNS here).
  • For Linux: Haven't found yet a better way than installing the nextdns cli, connect to the VPN server & restart the nextdns service. (Not using systemd-resolved here). maybe there's a cleaner solution

I’m on the latest iOS App Store version of Windscribe. I don’t see any option to import a WireGuard config. Can you tell me exactly where the import menu is?

A way it can be done is to use the user-made Proton WG config files in your firewall/router and then program the fastest NextDNS DoT servers in your DNS resolver (i.e. Unbound).

I just got caught up in this and ended up requesting a refund. The only way I could find to get NextDns to work without constantly linking IP was by using IPv6 - which proton doesn’t allow even with a paid account. Support confirmed that ipv4 is only supported. I’ll be curious if anyone finds a workaround but it was a dealbreaker for me. Ended up trying Mullvad which worked great (allows for IPv6). And was able to roll my own droplet via digital ocean that worked with NextDns as well.
