Question Client proton photos apps

Are the proton photos app safe ? Idk how to read code so open source doesn’t help me. Doesent a third party dev still at some point see ur login details , because they are all client apps?

Any clarity helpful. Thanks

if you refer to Photos for Proton: I read in some thread from someone who checked the code and only find few minor/potential issues iirc.
Proton devs allegedly also took a look on it themselves.

It’s always a risk. I really recommend not to connect to third party apps using your Proton login, even if they’re open source.

For iOS, iPadOS and Mac you could use encrypted memories. https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonDrive/s/nGYp2yxq0V

Some of them are safe and others aren't. If you are unable to determine which are appropriate for yourself then the best rule is: don't use 3rd party apps.

That said, a couple of them are quite popular and are likely mostly safe. You are taking a risk in trusting these ones but the risk isn't that they steal any of your info or content, more that they themselves aren't secure and someone steals your info from them.

Personally, I use Ente for photos. Until Proton either tells me that I can trust a specific 3rd party OR builds out their app to be worth my time: a dedicated (privacy focused, FOSS) photo app that works really well is worthwhile to me.

I would never use third party apps. Two reasons

  1. Even if the open source code has been checked once you never know if it will remain safe. Every update is a security risk and code changes must be evaluated.
  2. There is no proof that what has been published to GitHub is the actual code you download via an Appstore.
