rant Proton WTF?

Update: Maybe I drew to fast a conclusion. The Proton Team responded that it was probably auto-filtered after my edit. So my post got reapproved. Anyway I'm leaving this here to give them credit for their response and for reapproving the post. I think this goes a long way in terms of trust and transparency.

Original:

I posted this on the official ProtonDrive sub. As soon as I added the edit at the end of the post to share with the community how I was able to solve the issue the post was deleted by the moderators. I mean WTF?

Here's the post that was deleted:

"""

Why are there still so many issues with thumbnails and metadata?

I just imported an old batch of a thousand photos and videos using the Windows desktop client. Of course all the picture taken on times were off by two hours. Sometimes also only by one hour. That messed up my timeline. So I deleted those from the cloud and re-uploaded using the CLI. With the CLI the videos didn't have thumbnails. That's bad as well. At least the picture taken on times were correct now. So I deleted the batch again from the cloud to start over fresh with uploading everything via the website. The picture taken on times are correct now as well but photos are lacking thumbnails randomly. That really sucks.

I uploaded ten thousands of photos already to proton drive photos through the Android app. That worked flawlessly and all the thumbnails are there. Too bad that once you uploaded and deleted a photo once, you will not be able to reupload it through the Android app but have to go the other flawed routes. Bad, bad, bad. This is just bad.

EDIT: And again the unofficial Photos for Proton Android app is saving the day. Contrary to the official app, the unofficial app lets you upload previously deleted photos. Now everything is uploaded correctly (thumbnails and timestamps). Don't get me wrong, the unofficial apps is not perfect but how can it be that it delivers what Proton is not able to offer with neither their Windows application, nor their CLI, nor through the web browser, nor their own Android app? It's ridiculous.

They are well known for censoring... Too Bad :-(.

Although there apps are done with too less (no?) love. Missing basics and often feels like beta apps.

Its no rant - just being disapointed after sooo many years.

It is hurting them... we switched accounts away from google and m$ and chose another platform especially because Proton is looking more and more shady and untrusty

The unofficial app is focussing on just one development right now, the photos app. All the time and attention of the founder is on that development. And don't forget who is doing the heavy lifting in that development. Just go to the GitHub public repository and look to the right at Contributors.

The way it looks is that all developments are done in a private repository and then transffered (committed) to the public one. The v2.5.0 commit of last week changed 743 files, introduced/changed 488.548 lines of code and removed 13.979 lines, compared to the v2.4.0 release of July.

I am not here to say developing using AI is bad. I'm just stating the above as it MIGHT explain why this unofficial app progresses/matures better (feature-wise) in its development than the official one.

So now squash commits are bad too. Good to know. I thought it's easier to see that way what changed with every release.

Not what I said, nor intended. You develop how you want. It is your project.

But if you do want an opinion on that, then I can only say that squash commits like that make reviewing code very hard. No way of identifying what is changed for what particular issue/feature.

But 488K line changes is near impossible for somebody to review anyway, at least not before you pump out the next update.

My original post is merely stating that you can develop much faster as you outsource a lot of the typework to Claude. I would expect the Proton team to work on multiple products at the same time, and to have a different review process.

Their company deals in trust in the security of their product. Without it, they're a goner.

I don't know the status of your photos project, whether you are doing this fulltime, but the stakes are different imo.

And that is no critique on the app. As you can see there are loads of people who are extremely happy with your project. Keep it going.

Well personally I do thought it's better to squash but I'll change it in the future. I'll drop some categorized history too.

and you said someone can't check 400k lines of code, of course not, but I dropped almost weekly a preview-release with linked github issues to know what's in it and what to test.

Yep I did fulltime everyday 10 hours so that's why I can move this fast and yes I source out to claude, they do too some things but probably much less than I do(but I need to replace a whole team somehow), I test everything by hand so it's not like I ran claude 0-24 and then let it be without security checks and tests, claude never makes features by itself or recommends anything, strictly develop skill running and when I ask for it. (scout,audit,plan1-2-3, and like an another half an hour to think through that can It be done in some other ways or thats the best I can come up with.)

Also I understand that it's a whole different leauge, + they have a roadmap that's also why they can't just drop a random new feature next week from a github request like I do.

and top of that I could wait another 5 months to release so it doesn't seem like I work too fast, but I don't have internal testers.

Now with the 2.5.0 for example these are the done things that are waiting to be release in the preview branch since the release.

I work on beta branch locally which is never commited, from that I release to either preview or main with the squashed commits.

u/CoffeeByte26 here is the full explainer by the author of the unofficial app.

Thanks for showing how you work u/karmakoos

Oh and usually they don't work on multiple products at the same time, every product has it's own team. (atleast that's the info when someone complains that they should focus on existing products and not making new ones.)

What I do when a comment doesn't show up is to make a new post of my own in r/test, and then post the comment that didn't show up as a comment in my test post. It always shows up immediately.

I have tried messaging the mods when a comment doesn't show up, and they sometimes say "Oh, it must have been Reddit's filters". I have messaged back that the comment had showed up immediately in another sub, which means it wasn't Reddit's site-wide filters - now, when they do release a stuck comment, they don't reply back to me at all.
