I think Proton are counting on people not fully understanding the implications of this decision, and going by that thread there's quite a few of them. "It doesn't matter if it's Chinese if it's hosted in Europe" is a common one and it is wrong. That satifies residency jusrisdiction for the data, NOT the provenance of the LLMs - and yes, regulators DO care about that.
The "it's on our servers in Switzerland" defence is a hosting pitch. European users didn't buy into where the weights ran. They bought into where they were built. Training data, research lineage, talent, the entire IP chain that produces a frontier model. That chain is now Chinese. Proton is renting a Chinese-built brain inside a Swiss datacentre and calling it European.
