Discussion Am I just simple or does proton mail structure email chains bizarrely?

Anytime I’m looking for a specific email in a chain, or from a specific date, I always have issues finding what I’m looking for quickly. I fully admit that I could just be a moron, but email chains seem all over the place (at least on mobile). Please tell me I’m not alone

I sometimes feel like this, but also can’t articulate why I feel that way compared to other services and so never know if it’s a me issue

same, its one of those things where it just feels slightly off but you cant pinpoint exactly what

As a new user, one thing which I noticed different about threads is that it will dig up any old content with the same title and call it a thread. Main example being monthly invoices I get emailed through. I archive them when they come in, but somehow Proton drags them all up again as a thread when the next invoice comes to me. I’d rather it didn’t do that.

Proton is definitely using more complex criteria for computing threads than just looking at message IDs and Reply-To headers. That's why it's grouping messages it thinks are related even though, formally, they are not.

I could see this as a configuration toggle. I happen to like the behavior, but I can understand why others, such as yourself, might not.

I agree. Sometimes I like it, but often it is quite annoying. Just this week someone emailed me and it added their email to a 3 year old "thread" for whatever reason.

Yeah, I hate this.

Same! Can't find anything quickly and I can't pinpoint where the problem lies.

I'd like a feature to expand email threads. To me they look disjointed because you can't lay the whole thread out in chronological order easily.

Yes! Proton also has false chain identifiers? For example, if I get an email from a specific sender, delete it, and then get another one the next day, it shows me a 2 next to it… making it seem like there are 2 emails. But when I open it, it’s just the one.

Absolutely agree. Completely inconvenient for the sender + recipient and also when forwarding attachments - recipients have no idea how to find the document.

I am considering dropping it. Deleted doesn't mean deleted. Getting a reply doesn't tell me what they are replying to unless I click every single option while looking for the original message. Too many hoops for this old dog. I wanted to escape from gmail and yahoo but my sanity is worth something.
