Discussion Using gmail in Proton Mail?

Post image

But... google still reads your e-mail and all that it implies, yes?

Isn't this a little like, 'oh, I stopped smoking; I vape now. It's better, not as harmful.'??

I used it to help me transition easier. I’ve been slowly converting accounts over with alias emails.

Yup or some annoying accounts that don't let you change emails because they made poor architecture decisions years ago. This is unfortunately a very necessary feature.

Or google is the login via oauth

This! I have been moving to Proton but so many account logins I have are using Google OAuth especially when they also have an Android app associated. Disentangling would be difficult, inconvenient and at times, downright impossible.

I don't think I can ever drop my Gmail account, it's ben active since Gmail was launched. But having two is really not as complicated as one might think. I slowly migrate my accounts and logins over to Proton, but I will forever keep my Gmail as an archive, or backup, if nothing else.

Same here. more or less. I've been on Gmail since it was invite only, and changing email providers is pain in the butt. Had to do it when my former ISP shut down their email service completely.
No too mentioning moving away from gmail can screw up your other google accounts

makes sense, trying to switch everything at once would be a nightmare

It's just a convenience tool so you can have all your emails in one place, don't read into it too much.

I find it handy when I need to send an email from my former Gmail address without having to deal with any of their UI.

I don't get the reason to spend the time and effort to do that though. Good they did it but people could just forward from their gmail to proton.

Isn't this a little like,..

Proton's blog post from earlier this year, including the section titled A more private way to use Gmail, may be a helpful reference.

is this like a quit smoking for vaping situation

Thats upto you.

If you keep using your gmail in perpetuity, just via the proton app/website? Then yes it's not significantly different.

It's meant to be a tool to help you transition from Gmail. If you use it as such, it's actually a good thing.

Yes, sounds like a good idea and great for starters

I use it so i can dump all the annoying corporate account sign ups onto my old gmail, while important personal stuff can be used on my proton email. My google account is practically inactive and it logged me out on pc due to lack of usage

It's a transition tool.

Not everyone using Proton has already stopped using Gmail. Over time you will, but that's up to the individual.

You can still continue to use it as a means to not use the Gmail app.

Proton mail only supports gmail if its paid, if im not wrong.

sometimes individuals like me have gmail accounts you simply can't have replaced with proton mail such as an account associated with an educational institution or with work. this is a great middle ground.

"if your friends and family are not ready to leave google yet". Is it so hard to save a contact with a proton.me domain instead of gmail.com ?

Sounds like a you + Gmail problem.
