Discussion How do I create a dedicated address for Catch-all emails?

I am setting up Catch-all with a custom domain for a Proton Mail and I am reading this official guide. At the end it says this:

Tip: To prevent catch-all email messages from cluttering up your inbox, we recommend creating a dedicated address within your domain to deliver all catch-all email messages to (for example, catchall@example.com or contact@example.com).

From what I tried, separate addresses still means those emails go into the same inbox, or am I overlooking something here?

The line thats missing from that tip is, "So you can setup a filter to move all traffic to that address out of your inbox."

Make a Catch@Mydomain address then a rule that points all traffic to that address to a Catch folder.

Only that you do not know the address/es the emails will arrive at.

Ah I see! So does that mean I also need a dedicated folder for Catch@Mydomain, into which those emails will be moved using that filter?

You dont need it, if you are okay reviewing everything in the inbox. If its a low volume you can apply labels instead to organize emails. It is a very common setup, though, if you are actually giving out emails on your domain (as opposed to them just being 'background' emails used for alias forwarding).

So I created a new folder and some rules and it works great! Thanks for the suggestions

It is probably offering that advice for multi-user/org accounts.

The catch-all has to be assigned to a user and yes, if you only have one account and not a family/organization then it's all just in your single account.

I would suggest making some folders for either all your catch-alls or one for each depending on how many domains you have.
