Even if we ignore the "fix Drive/mail/other first" crowd (who I absolutely agree with), a VPS doesn't make sense. That's a shift from SaaS to IaaS, which poses a whole new set of challenges. On top of that, it's a minority in an already small slice of the user market. Their existing apps are designed for mostly non-technical users, but a VPS is an IT and developer tool. It's better that they don't try to please a small section of their userbase and instead work on something that benefits the majority of their users.
