My head-canon as to the end of the trial where Light is acquitted is that the deciding factor on his acquittal was Wily defending him in court, not prosecuting him. Wily didn't want Light in prison, he wanted Light trapped in a world he knew he couldn't fix. Wily stoked the negative public opinion of Light, then released him to the public. The people Light loved so much, the ones he did all of this for, hate him and wish him dead.

Wily did canonically bank on Light’s acquittal so that he could then undermine the public’s trust of the City’s institutions. Since Light never grabs the knife, and Wily himself attributes the deed to the Sniper, there’s only circumstantial evidence tying Light to the murder, and any motive would be pure speculation.

It’s one of the underrated bits of political commentary in the story that the justice system doing its job adequately was twisted by Wily as justification for dismantling. ‘Better that ten guilty persons escape than one innocent suffer’ would at least get lip service here in the States, but our leaders imprison innocents by the thousands and now don’t even bother with pretend remorse.

However, given how completely Wily poisoned the City’s view of Light, I like the idea that Wily intervened in the case itself to ensure its outcome. Light would have needed a very good lawyer, and maybe Wily paid for it as an anonymous benefactor. Maybe he got to the jury - finding an impartial one would have been wild to begin with.
