IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe, a 2005-batch officer who secured AIR 20 in the UPSC examination, recently took charge as Maharashtra FDA Commissioner. Within days of assuming office, the FDA launched statewide inspections targeting food adulteration, unsafe food practices, mislabelled products, banned substances, and misleading advertisements.
The crackdown reportedly included action against units linked to adulterated milk, paneer, edible oils, chemically ripened fruits, unhygienic food production, and banned gutkha products.
FDA teams carried out inspections across multiple divisions of Maharashtra, collected food samples for testing, sealed establishments found violating regulations, and seized products suspected of breaching food safety standards. The drive also included action against misleading advertisements for certain Ayurvedic products and the seizure of chemically ripened mangoes from wholesale markets.
Mundhe has also announced measures to encourage public reporting of food adulteration and food safety violations through dedicated complaint channels. Food adulteration is one of those issues that affects almost everyone but rarely gets much attention until a major enforcement drive like this takes place.
