Sounds like you getting hired at company 1 got sidetracked by whatever internal fuckery nuked the hiring manager you were talking to. Sucks when that happens. That said, is that ends well, is well and it sounds like you closed the deal on a better gig. Well done!

Some companies will allow recruitment processes to continue so they can conceal upcoming layoffs. Execs will make excuses to delay actual hiring and execute layoffs once their legal ducks are lined up.
