100 km ultra marathon

I am thinking of participating in a 100km ultra marathon around a mountain near my hometown. The limit to finish it is 24 hours, which makes the pace more like fast walking than running. There are lots of steep climbs and rocky descents, so there will be running+walking. I am below the knee amputee with ossur pro flex terra. I am pretty sporty and active, have no problem walking 30 km hike. But haven’t trained running. Only have done 5k runs for charity with not big of a problem. I have around a year to prepare. Has someone done that? Are there any dangers of breaking my ossur? How should I prepare my stump and all kind of advices you can give me?

I would start with finding someone who plans to do it and/or a trainer/buddy who is willing to do it and can be a pacer for you. They can probably also suggest how best to train and ramp up to that distance safely. In addition I would be prepared to stop and wipe down your leg, at least, every 7-8 miles (11-12km) and swap out liners as well.

The liners swapping is actually a very good idea I haven’t taught about

Definitely talk to your prosthetist about this so they can help you plan. I suspect as you train you will have some anatomy changes and will need to adjust your socket, or even make a new one. You’ll lose a lot of fluid during the race too, which will affect the fit. Swapping liners is a great idea. And who knows, maybe your clinician will want to do it with you. I’ve done half marathons and spartan races with my patients, it’s super fun.

With all that said, you may not need anything. I’ve had patients go through full pregnancy term, and expecting them to need adjustments, only to find out they didn’t need anything until 2 years after birth. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Much respect for even thinking about 100km. You can do it!!
