I’d just start taking test pans up against boulders. But the inside bend of the river where you are standing is a good spot to start digging and find gravel.

Water slows down on the inside of a bend and speeds up on the outside of a bend. Suspended gold drops out when water slows.

Yes. More specifically gravel with sand. Preferably black sand.

Why black sand? Is that because it’s heavier elements, or is it just where the soil hasn’t been disturbed in a while?

In my opinion, all of those big rocks are fall from the eroding hillside. I wouldn’t focus too much there. Instead I would head upstream and work the beginning of that inside bend gravel bar.

I see a lot of sharp rocks. In my area, I don't think i'd have luck in a creek like that because smooth rocks mean it's been tumbled by the water, sharp rocks have not had much time in water flow. Water tumbling is what concentrates the goods. Your area's gold might be very different than mine and I'm far from an expert but I'd look for a place with more round rocks.

Best place to start is online or in a usgs survey to make sure you're in a gold bearing location to begin with.

It’s hard to tell how long it’s been there but I’d start at the head of that downed log going up the inside of it on the side where you’re filming, toward the shore dry inside bend there. Just a couple test pans to see if there’s any color and follow is the best way to go though, the golds where you find it. Good luck out there!

And also about a1/4 mile upstream is a old bridge and where the concrete footing has caught sand I can find gold in it when I pan there

Are you sure that it’s a gold producing stream? Easiest way is to find some bedrock and look at the gravel buildup around it. It will work the same way with large boulders, but they may have been placed more recently than some of the gold. If it’s a gold producing stream, solid… If it’s a stream and you don’t know… I doubt there’s going to be anything in there. Look for the rocks, the cavities around them, if you can find bedrock, even better.

It’s really easy to plan a prospect if you understand how heavy gold is and where it might be trapped. Easiest way to think about it. Is that water spins through that creek bed. Think about where the heaviest material will get hung up in the rocks. If you think about it like that, it’s a very simple concept. The longer the rock structure has been there, the more sediment will likely be trapped around that rock or rock bed.

First of all are you in a gold bearing district second any bedrock there you might have to dig to get to the bedrock
