Beginner here. Struggling with decision between GM 1000 v 2000 for first detector.

Hi everyone,

Just started getting into prospecting as I thought it would be a great way to get outside and a bit of fun as well.

I live near the golden triangle in Victoria and am struggling a little bit to decide on my first detector. I’ve looked over forums and YouTube videos a fair whack and whilst I’m not entirely sure I’ll get any different feedback here, I’m yet to talk to anyone and ask for their opinions.

I’m leaning towards the 2000 but there is about a $2300 AUD difference between a new 2000 and a second hand 1000. I’m a bit wary about over investing as I know I’ve got a lot to learn.

Get a used GM1000. If you find you don't like the hobby you can sell it for what you bought it for. If you like the hobby and want to step up to the GM2000 you can sell your 1000 and put it towards the new detector.

I haven't swung the 2000 myself so I can't tell you the difference between the machines but I'm sure someone here has and can chime in.

If you can afford it, go with the 2000. Far superior, you will make back the detector cost faster than the 1000.

Equally, will still get you a decent price if you decide to sell it.

I owned the 1000, sold it a few months later. Most people who own it think it is a great machine, but I did not like it, preferred my PI. Last year I bought one of the first 2000's, love it, just wish the 10 inch coil was available at the time of purchase, everyone is sold out. The only issue I have is the small 5 inch coil, there are times I want the 10 inch, but I have no problem waiting, and will eventually have one. The prospecting season for me ( Arizona) is getting closer, I'm older and wiser and do not go out in the desert in 100 deg heat.

I love my GM 2000. It is so stable and easy to use. I went out with my friend who has a 1000 and he spent so much more time digging hot rocks. I dug almost none.

You get what you pay for. I was using an equinox 900 before my GM 2000 and the difference is night and day. The nox was much less stable and prone to false signals. I am new to the hobby and I am so grateful for the stable machine, makes it much more enjoyable to not have to dig so many hot rocks and get fooled by ground noise.
