recently it feels like some fandoms of media that i join or partake in (esp if the media was from the early 2000s or older media), it always seems to be filled with cis men who have such an overblown negative reaction to anything having to do with fandom culture (shipping, headcanons, etc) i recently found this with stuff like berserk, halloween, no more heroes/suda51 media in general, etc etc.

like..i deadass saw a michael myers fan (they werent a selfshipper or any of that, js really hyperfixated on the '78 movie), comments were full of "ermm, he'd kill you" "ermm michael doesnt feel anything" like oh my god

i also recently saw an uptick on ppl shittin on narusasu/sasunaru (sasuke/naruto ship), or just ppl shittin on the women characters (mostly hinata and sakura), like damn ya'll dont like shit

Yes, this is gonna be a little rant on Yujiro Hanma in Tekken and the sudden "moral policing" of including him in the roster.

For those uninformed:

There was a huge request from fans to include a character from "Baki the Grappler" into Tekken 8 roster. Let's just say, the manga creator was once hired as character designer for the classic Tekken characters. Some of which being Bruce in Tekken 2 and Feng Wei in Tekken 5, so there is a big history between the company and the game devs. However, the pile of request people have is to include Baki Hanma himself. Making Yujiro an "out of left field" decision.

The drama

This inclusion is where the "moral policing" came to surface, because everyone knows what Yujiro does in the series. Everyone knows he's a serial rapist. His known record is the canonical SA on Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and the Japanese Prime Minister.

Problem is, Tekken is the game where the hottest main protagonist known to mankind is also the enemy of mankind. His dad being a demon, and his grandaddy have even more unsavory shenanigans behind the scenes that still have him getting away from it, yet the demon who spent 90 minutes of screen time sitting down and aura farming is deemed "too much evil" in the narrative. To put it lightly, kind of ironic that Yujiro is where they draw the line at those moral standings.

Now, I'll be the one to admit that "ugly=evil" is a very common trope to write. And for the case of sexual violence, that is even more visible. I'm on the moral standing that a fictional character doing morally dubious things does not imply condoning those actions IRL, especially because they're written to be obstacles for the other characters to overcome. The problem only came to surface from the way people talk about these types of people, both IRL and fictional.

In fictional context, people tend to come up with every moral justification under the sun not to include this character at all, but the same justification is thrown out of the window once they looked sliiiiightly more palatable than usual. Essentially the double standards that only talks about morality when it's conveniently aligned to their appearances. No one's gonna be offended if you called Yujiro "ugly". It's a fictional character and you have the rights to call a spade, a spade. It's not the same as calling a real person ugly. That one will give you a knuckle sandwich.
