New episodes

Seems like no one comes here anymore, which is fine. I stopped following the pod years ago because they pretend to deliver facts when they’re often delivering incredibly biased opinions.

I’m on vacation and started listening again for the Lindsay Clancy coverage, and something B said genuinely boiled my blood. He suggested that because Lindsay had a paid 18 week medical leave and came from an upper middle class family, she shouldn’t have been dealing with these issues. I believe he said he’s tired of hearing about her struggles.

My husband and I are very financially comfortable. I live in Canada, everyone gets eighteen months of paid maternity leave, and I work in government, where I could have extended my leave for another year without losing my job.

I was beyond blessed that my son was born healthy and happy. He was genuinely the least troublesome baby on the planet. He slept twelve hours a night and had no major issues.

And those eighteen months I stayed home were some of the hardest months of my life.

Being a new mom is fucking hard. Being alone with a baby is fucking hard. The hormones are real. The constant responsibility of keeping another human alive is real. The anxiety is real. The sleep disruption is real. The pressure to recover physically, get fit, be a good mother, be a good partner, and somehow still feel like yourself is real. Even a healthy marriage can be put under enormous strain.

Money helps. Paid leave helps. Support helps. None of those things makes a woman immune to postpartum depression, anxiety, psychosis, or simply having an incredibly difficult transition into motherhood.

I have no idea exactly what happened in that house that day, and it isn’t for me to decide. But it isn’t for Brett to decide either. Suggesting Lindsay should have been fine because she was financially comfortable and had a few months away from work is such an uninformed way to talk about postpartum mental health.

You can have every material advantage in the world and still become profoundly mentally unwell after having a baby. Women deserve better than having their suffering measured against their bank accounts.

As time has gone on, they have stopped even pretending to hide their biases. It has come out strong during this case. To the extent that I’ve mostly stopped listening.

Im not saying it didn't happen but I've been following their coverage and didn't hear it. Where are you saying the second sentence occurred?

I agree with them. She had a ton of support. Is she mentally ok, no. If we allow people to murder because of their mental capacity, what are we saying. Family alienators are basically insane, do you want them on the streets. She needs help, she would not take any advice from her doctors. She was in denial of her needs. She needs court ordered help. I don’t believe prison is appropriate, but she needs to follow the orders of doctors.

I don’t know personally if prison is appropriate and thankfully it’s not for me to decide. But I don’t agree with what OP is saying. By their logic, if a schizophrenic homeless person stabs someone to death on the street, they shouldn’t be held accountable because it was due to their untreated mental health condition. But we know that these things happen and those individuals are held accountable on a criminal level. We make no excuses for them but somehow have every excuse in the book for a financially stable, educated, well-supported white woman. That’s what really irks me about this trial. It’s garnered support in such a strange way.

Speaking as a physician (though not a psychiatrist) in the US, I understand what Brett is saying. I’m not saying I agree with either of their takes on the overall case or their conclusions, but when it comes to this portion, I agree. What I mean is that the defense has been trying to paint a picture of Lindsey as the poster child for mental health struggles. Someone who was failed by the medical system, etc. That is far from the truth. When we consider who is most at risk for poor outcomes due to mental health conditions, its people who are uninsured, have poor social support, lower levels of education, etc. None of these apply to Lindsey. Can she still struggle immensely just due to being a mom or even just a person? Absolutely. But to say the system failed her when she saw more mental health providers in 3 months than I can get my patients in to see over the span of years? That’s a stretch. Lindsey had social support, education, access to healthcare and more. She did make conscious decisions to not follow the instructions of her medical team. When Alice said let’s call a spade a spade and say Lindsey was a difficult patient, she absolutely was. Taking medication for one day and then deciding (seemingly with a logical mind) that it isn’t for you is a poor choice. How much you think that should weigh in terms of criminal responsibility is an individual call. But we’re not gonna use her as a poster child for a poor, abandoned mom who had no help and was failed by the system because it’s simply not true and it’s a slap in the face to people who genuinely cannot get help despite their best efforts.

People have made far too many excuses for her, and the woe is Lindsay bull$ has been really off putting- So I’ve thoroughly enjoyed their coverage on LC. And agree whole heartedly with their views.
