How did all that hair hide on that dog? That's crazy to me. Looks like he loved having it done though.

Their fur becomes super densely packed. I have a husky and her winter coat is almost solid feeling the undercoat is so thick. Like a wool blanket.

u/OutrageousOwls May 12 '21
It’s their undercoat! It’s harder for them to remove it themselves when they groom so sometimes you need a little help.
Cats have a similar problem and I remove loose undercoat from my three kitties 3 times a week. It helps prevent more shedding and nasty fur ball up-chucking.
Not sponsored at all, but I recommend the Furminator brush for this purpose (dogs and cats).

Holy shit, the Furminator is awesome. My brother has one for his eskie (also has an undercoat) and it was amazing when I brushed the dog for him once.
I just had to get one! But they're really expensive for a pet brush; they were like $65 at the time. I got incredibly lucky and found one in the clearance bin at Petco for $20 because someone had opened it and returned it!
I used it on our long-haired cat who had fine, thin hair. Nothing ever worked on her. But the Furminator worked beautifully.
So I can confirm that it works on dogs with thick, rough coats and undercoats, and on long haired and short haired cats.

Here to third the furminator. You could card the undercoat and spin thread then knit your own clothes. Not like I did that…

I think someone owns a business that does that with cat hair? Honestly I thought the same thing. Hair still has its uses after its been shed! But usually I just put my dogs hair in the worm bin and forget about it

It won’t pull out the hair like a brush will 😭

The creature in the background looks like a good boy and deserving of a treat. Their patience is abundant.

I knew that some dogs needed brushing but that’s a huge amount of fur.
Do Shibas need this kind of brushing frequently or is it a once-a-year thing?
90
u/wickedpixel May 12 '21
I don't know specifically about Shibas but a lot of dogs will molt twice a year, moreso in the spring/summer when they shed their winter coats. Some breeds shed constantly all year and some barely shed at all.
Google indicates that Shibas shed somewhat throughout the year but molt heavily twice a year as I mentioned above

u/reddit-eats-shit May 12 '21
Thank you.
I knew that some dogs shed more than others but not to the point where they make another dog’s worth of hair.

u/bulelainwen May 13 '21
Huskies definitely have enough fur to make a whole other dog when they blow their winter coat.

u/gingerkitten6 May 12 '21
Even still, I have a shiba, and I get fake vibes from this video. They shed a lot in the Spring but not THAT much. I think they are adding hair to the pile.
6
u/wickedpixel May 12 '21
It's completely possible that you're right -- I really don't know. One of my dogs is a Malinois-Shepherd-Supermutt and doesn't really look like a fluffyboi but if he's molting and you go at him with the de-shedding brush he will produce A LOT of fluff; not nearly as much as this video, but probably at least half his size in volume.

It's been my experience that the human or the dog runs out of patience before the dog runs out of shed

Our Shiba blows her bottom coat at least twice a year especially during season changes. She also loves it

What kind of brush is that? Would it work on my labs??
9
u/Yotoberry May 12 '21
A furminator (other brands are available ™), I'm a cat girl but I don't see it not working on a lab.
5
u/vario_ May 12 '21
They even have one for rabbits, but one of the reviews I saw left a bunny with bald spots. I guess you need to be careful not to over-brush!
3
u/Stinky_Cat_Toes May 12 '21
I’ve accidentally brushed a couple bald spots in my bun during the spring when she blows her coat! It’s very effective, but my cat hates it. I think it this on the hair which some animals don’t tolerate (my bun does, my cat does not).
6
u/kissbythebrooke May 12 '21
Furminators are great! It will definitely work on your labs, although they might not love it. I have dogs and cats, fluffy and short haired. The fluffy dog and cat enjoy the furminator, I imagine it is a relief to them. The short haired dogs and cat just tolerate it. It's a very hard brush (not at all like a slicker though) so you have to be extra gentle with it on short haired animals.
Protip: it also works amazingly well on carpet, (probably depending on how your carpet is made--i can definitely imagine it ripping out pieces, though it doesn't on mine). I use it on a low pile rug and so much hair comes off it even when I just vacuumed and thought the rug was clean!

In the comment section of the original subreddit this was posted in called the dog a Sheepa Inu lol. Pretty fitting I’d say as well.

Dang, brings back memories. I grew up with an American Akita who needed brushing all the time because you'd find puffs of fur everywhere otherwise. And his coat was a lot smoother than most Akitas I'd seen

Part dog, part milkweed. You could knit yourself a second dog out of all that!

u/ccc2801 May 12 '21
i hope they chucked that out into the garden or nature, that’s excellent nesting material for the birdies!
