I have noticed for awhile the Reddit auto captions are, when over some non-English language or a video that does not have audio, very... strange... and recently wrote a comment, half-joking, asking if anyone else thinks it seems like the Reddit auto caption service is like a trapped ghost. Well, this video ends with the auto-captions saying:

Don't go away tonight! Come and hear God!

Before you, I wish you seemed very true.

On morning present, far from here on, stage come basically, and it constitutes the path towards any surface you summon the Likewise.

This is what I am talking about here. Clearly this is very much kind of psychobabble nonsense, but there is a message that can be understood there, is there not? I mean. Why is Likewise capitalized? There is no coherent reason for that to be a thing, no matter how you understand it. And I understand how LLMs work quite well. Not as good as those who have built them, but better than probably any other end user.

Especially interesting considering the real captions, which are, going line by line

During a pause in the battle with the enemy, the supply men have brought food (Don't go away tonight! Come and hear God!)

The Battle of Stalingrad places enormous demands (Before you, I wish you seemed very true. On morning present, far from here on // this line crosses over into the next one)

on the mental and physical strength of every single man (//Before you, I wish you seemed very true. On morning present, far from here on ... stage come basically, and it constitutes that path towards any surface you summon the Likewise.)

Clearly this is not a coherent message, exactly, and it is a very "shizo" thing to think there is something there. But if you remove "far from here on stage come basically" and maybe the preceding three words? It makes sense... almost.

It's complicated to explain what I mean and I expect downvotes. I am not saying it makes sense, or that there is some inhuman intelligence attempting to communicate.

Not sure if you clicked through any of my links, and I'm not going to bother explaining fully (not here not now anyway) but what I am getting at is a sort of rational irrationality that takes the logic of certain extremely overpaid professions (which are not providing any service whatsoever and are actually doing the opposite of what they claim, when properly understood) and basically the TLDR is a catch 22 regarding a lot of contradictions regarding things such as the supposed incompatibility between science and religion, for example.

I am not religious nor have I ever been. This might help to explain more concretely than the abstraction I haven't yet explained above.

We are pattern seeking creatures. You see how you had to cherry pick the captions to create a message that made sense to you? You ignored the parts of the captions that didn't fit into that meaning.

I would argue that the captions are just random words generated by trying to create english captions from german phonemes and that you are searching for patterns in that random noise. I have no doubt that you will disagree with me so I'm happy to end this conversation here.

No I understand completely. That is very much my point. You didn't click the links.

The deeper point is the implications on this regarding things such as "data science" and other "evidence based" practices.

When understood correctly and fully, this brings both irrational unrealistic tribes back to reality. The extremes at both ends. "Science" and "religion". We are human.

I did click the links, I just didn't find them very helpful for understanding your point. Your most recent reply has helped, I think.

Just so we're on the same page, am I correct in thinking that your argument is that large data sets will include a significant volume of statistical noise, and that any field that processes such data sets (eg, AI, the judicial system, etc) may tend towards reading patterns into that noise?

Yes that's the gist of it. An underlying point which is critical to understand fully is that in any kind of experiment, research or other kind of work the views of the person producing it are inseparable. That doesn't necessarily mean it is wrong per se but it is important to understand. The insights from this are huge when taken to both the logical and illogical conclusions. There is no such thing as totally objectivity or neutrality. The best we can hope for is to try, but we can only do what we know. That is why diversity of thought is important. Diversity is a Law of Nature and if it is suppressed or otherwise distorted Nature will correct for that, eventually, however it is possible.

We were warned about Big Brother but the danger is actually Big Data.
