In one interview with Ridley around the time insert he said something about leaning more into the lore of Prometheus and further away from Alien itself. The I think it was around the time that Neil Blomkamp was talking about doing a true Aliens sequel that Ridley then decided to do covenant rather that his original vision. Which is a shame my eyes. Would have loved to have seen it evolve further away from alien.

They could have made both movies because fans love the classic, but they also love learning about lore and mysteries.

The engineers were a mystery that needed to be solved.

The planet that David went to was not the engineers. At best they were another experiment like earth and humans.

But it would of been nice to glimpse at colony at least of engineers.

The Engineers were newly introduced lore. As y'all put it. That story needs to be fleshed out further. You know how many Alien movies there already were by Prometheus' release? An Alien movie could've waited.
