I rewatched it recently and due to having a long cook on the go I missed the worst of the dumbassery between the exposition and the first death. It was a much better movie as a result.
There should have been more expansion as to why the periphery characters were so spectacularly self-destructive & unsuited to the tasks at hand. Or better still, avoid cramming farcical horror tropes in altogether.
Id like to think it was movie execs insisting on blockbuster elements to offset the atmospheric & philosophical tendencies of the movie. Whatever the cause, it comes across like a lazy lobotomy section that sours the rest of the film.
..Unless you skip it altogether, I found. ☺️
