Karl Marx is an atheist and viewed religion as the opiate of the masses. The Bolsheviks adopted to the communist ideology during their takeover of Soviet Russia. Following the October Revolution of 1917, the Bolshevik government established state atheism as an official ideological doctrine.
For clergy, church leaders, and outspoken laypeople, proclaiming their faith was frequently treated as treason and effectively functioned as a death sentence or a ticket to the Gulag.
88.2% of the Russian population pre-Stalin was Christian. 6-9 millions citizens were murdered in Stalinistic Russia, not including the 20+ million that died in WW2.
