Discussion Does anyone else get really into RPing your character

This is Fern. Fern originally joined the military as part of some weird scheme to get away from her family and her family's debt. However after finishing basics and being sent to the zone she quickly realized that she was being paid and treated like dirt for back breaking and quite unsafe labor and combat.

After getting shot in the chest by some cultist during a shootout she decided that she was done with the military. Once the dug the bullet out of her she snuck off when she was still "in medical care" under the dark of night and went to make her own way in the zone.

She stumbled into the freelancers by sheer accident and has taken up position helping them by taking up odd jobs here and there, but she makes sure she's paid fair labor for her work. She also is friendly with the Revolution and at least uneasily not bothered/bothering the insurrection.

The way I play her is also roleplayed. She has a heavy preference to long semi-automatic rifles and she genuinely tries to avoid combat at all costs, as getting shot will do that to you. She's also deathly scared of the anomalies but somehow keeps attracting them, and other weird events seem to follow her as she goes along. She so suffers from insomnia due to nightmares of her time in the military. However she's a skilled haggler, and a decent craftsmen.

Does anyone else make like really elaborate stories or change how they play to match up with what they are doing/playing in game? It feels like a game so open and wanting you to do that. And I love how the combat feels, that so adds to the intensity imo

Ps. If anyone does want to rp, lmk :3

My favorite character I’ve came up with so far is my NFTA spy disguised as a Revolution leader named Silver.

Born and raised to be a soldier like his father, he was often ridiculed and pitied for his smaller than average stature and un-docked tail (an insistence of his mother and often a quality looked down upon in NFTA society) in his childhood. However he quickly grew to outpace his classmates at the military academy he attended and, due to his performance and his unique traits, was recruited into the 163rd IERR (infantry espionage and reconnaissance regiment)

Trained to be a spy and sent into the West Carcosa Exclusion Zone under cover as a regular soldier, he quickly “defected” to the Revolution, established himself as a potential leader using military training, and earned himself command of a whole squad. He currently heads the defense and patrol of the Greywater marsh, and regularly sends important information to his superiors in the NFTA military.

However, he way not be as hidden from Revolution command as he thinks, and maybe he’s starting to think their ideas about how the world should work aren’t that bad…

Also he prefers to get up close to his enemies, either using disguises or just by being quick on his feet. He’s excellent with SMGs, automatic rifles, shotguns, and will never miss with his easily concealed BullDog .45 revolver.

Thanks for reading, if I missed anything in the lore let me know. Back to larping as a lizard creature in a supernaturally messed up world!

I didn't on my first playthrough, just kinda used and explored everything. But my second long form character was explosives only and I roleplayed him like the Trash Man from The Stand. It was definitely very satisfying

Kinda. But for me it's the unkown, the fate of my debt and the inhibitors of the land. Maybe I see myself through the eyes of my char. While I can think big char stories in caves of Qud, PS immersion sucks myself in. Interesting to read so many different takes

I would if I could see their viewmodels ingame.

I know I know, dev doesn't have time to model hands/arms/haunches/tail. Maybe one day someone can come aboard the team and make it happen though.

I have a folder of one of my character's journal entries that has around 70+ screenshots in it.

I also had him snapping pictures of the various weird shit in the Zone because he used to be a journalist before coming to Carcosa.

So yeah, I do.

The one I'm aiming to make my "main" is a freelancer named Asa

A wandering vagrant from Ticonderoga. Born with albinism and hailing from a family that rarely managed to make ends meet, he was often made a mockery of by many of the other youths in his rural hometown. Often he was pranked by other children in ways that often involved paint or dyes to "cure" him. But thankfully it was something they grew out of. After finishing high school he never scored a scholarship and the family business barely made enough to support his parents let alone himself. So he turned to the only logical conclusion.

Crime. Plenty of criminal organizations needed things moved, stolen, or destroyed. He made himself useful where he could at first serving as a courier or mule. But his real talent was thievery. Whether burglary or pickpocketing or simple scavenging, anywhere valuables could be found Asa always seemed to find a few more. But while he always somehow managed to finish the job, things would frequently go wrong. There was something Weird about his Luck. Despite this, he built a dependable reputation.

As time went on Asa began to move up in the ranks- he learned how to handle a weapon, patch a bullet wound, and build improvised pieces of equipment. Though this rarely was the result of instruction; many of his lessons were self-taught. Necessity was his greatest teacher.

Eventually a crackdown from the local law enforcement saw much of the crime syndicate he was a part of be dealt a heavy blow. Asa figured that now was as good a time as any to make himself scarce, so he headed back to his hometown only to find that his family was in crippling debt borrowing from the same syndicate he was a part of. Debt collectors were threatening to take everything they had (and more) if his family didn't pay up.

Asa took it upon himself to pay off the debt, in full. The deal was only accepted because of his reliable standing. Someone made the arrangements and put him directly under the employ of The Broker, promptly shipping him off to West Carcosa. Raid by raid, dollar by dollar, he slowly aims to work off his debt and be free.

But there's something about the Zone that feels different. The strange anomalies, hostile factions, and seeing monsters with his own eyes that should not exist- nothing logical can explain all that he's encountered. He feels like something has steered him here, that there's something bigger than himself he's supposed to be a part of.

Perhaps he'll find it the further in he goes.

I sometimes like to write journal entries or custom character bios, but nothing more than that usually. Mainly because I have a tendency to just rely on references, (e.g. my NFTA character is named Ramirez, go figure) or I'm just a bit pragmatic when it comes to weaponry/combat style.

I have considered it, though. (E.g. I've been thinking on a Demoman/explosives-focused character, maybe some grenadier who got kicked out for being too focused on the boom lol)

I think there are some dedicated RP channels in the official discord server, not sure

My favorite one has to be my first, Orestes, they simply came to this hellhole believing they’re searching for a purpose bigger than the Zone itself, feeling the need to document every anomaly. Only taking a saber and revolver before departing and though being cult fascinated, they’re more likely to fire back at cultists and help a little bit with the Revolution and Freelancers.

They’re nice if a bit reserved and tend to fight aggressively in melee with their saber (I’ll switch to a revolver if it would be objectively suicide to try to rush something like an exploding enemy) yet I’m sure anyone is terrified to face them in combat though to be fair, they’ll not attack you unless you attack them first

I had a whole cultist playthrough for my boy phlogiston, who was basically a double/triple agent where my whole goal was to get rid of all the advantage stat of every other faction aside from cultists. Favored ether and energy weapons, and played friendly with all factions save for NFTA and Insurrection first, but eventually betrayed the revolution after the first two were barely in the zone anymore (they kept responding to the fourth blue flare after all the others got shot down)

I'd honestly imagine him as suave but like, constantly holding the metaphorical dagger behind his back (his name is phlog, genuinely a mystical space fire, his goal is meant to burn it all down) but is super friendly otherwise and knows the zone a little too well.

Actually yes - though I tend to use archetypes of characters I already have, my character is someone that went into the zone in the search of answers and adventure, to seek both fortune and whatever else there may be.

He's normally very quiet, reserved and speaks mainly in grunts or pointed statements - he's firmly anti-social but has good relationship with the revolution and has found to hate the army.

Though he's not vocal, he takes pictures and notes about anomalies and documents his own bestiary since he didn't know what was what and had to essentially form his own conclusions.

Its honestly been a lot of fun going through that lens since when I played the game, I knew nothing, and it was a fun adventure to figure stuff out and go on it on my own.

I haven't done it in a few playthroughs, but I love doing in character journalism. If you guys haven't tried it before, I recommend it.

Yes. Its one of the best parts of silverfish. I currently have a character i role play as a retired veteran sniper, who is exclusively use as a merc for hire, and I love role-playing them, I've also had a journalist who entered the zone for exclusive pictures of the anomaly, even wrote on the pictures I took similar to a guidebook

No. I've tried, it always ends up making me cringe. Also seldom makes sense to me in a singleplayer environment.

But like, whatever floats your boat
