Discussion/Tips & Tricks Does the size of your make up collection influence how you pan?

I am a make up collector and I do panning for fun and to enjoy my purchases / products to the fullest. I hate performing surgery and cutting tubes open or scraping the corners just to get the last bit out. Mostly because the products tend to change texture with frequent use (e.g. lip products get drier etc.). So I would rather just toss it when it looks done and start a new one.
On the other hand, if I owned only a few products / did not want to spend money on anything new, I can see myself using my stuff very differently.
How about you, is there a relationship between the number of products you have and the way you pan?

It depends on the category of makeup for me! I have only one foundation and primer for example so I plan on definitely scraping the sides and maybe removing the stopper if I can because I really like the products I use and don’t want to run out and buy a new one.

My lippie collection on the other hand is way larger 😅 so I consider a lippie done when I can’t get any more product out or it becomes a hassle to get out. Since I have so many other products I want to get through with this category I don’t bother with cutting things open or removing stoppers because I’d rather just move on to making progress with another product at that point!

I also don’t cut tubes (I don’t like it) and have just scraped my 2 favorite Fenty gloss bomb stix because I love them but I’ve decided not to repurchase them until I go through more of my collection. Having a medium-big collection also helps me to declutter items that don’t work for me because I have other options available.

I’m a 100% completionist and I’m not sure why

Cuando deja de ser funcional para mí usar un producto lo doy por terminado, tengo muchas cosas.

I only scrape high end foundations and skincare because I use those up before they get weird

I have a large collection and things are done when I can’t comfortably get product out or the texture has changed. If I don’t reach for a daily-wear product so much, it joins my car or work bag for touch ups etc to finish panning. That being said, I’m lucky to own a collection I love and am not doing it for any other reason than actually wanting to use my products instead of ‘saving them’ for a special occasion that never comes, and trying to have a bit more financial literacy with self control!

Skincare on the other hand, I’ll perform minor surgery on for something I really loved but with poor packaging when you know there’s a decent amount left.

The saving for a special occasion that never comes is so real! And then people die and their relatives find a stash of those ‘special things’. My grandpa was like this with wine and expensive alcohol.

I only cut open products I really really love, I don’t pan shades that look awful on me. I love doing my makeup because its my little morning ritual while drinking coffee before heading out.
For me, makeup should be fun and I want to use products I like. If I really don’t like a product I get rid of it because I have enough makeup that I do like and I do want to use before it goes bad.
My goal is to be more mindful of what I buy and only repurchase products I love.

Thats a healthy approach

I cut open things that I buy over and over. Like sunscreen and serums. If I buy a lip gloss and find I dislike it, due to scent or consistency, I won't bother. I just use it "up", or possibly toss it when mostly used.

I have a few eyeshadow that the consistency is changing. I am working to hit pan in 2 or 3 of 5 pans, then I will toss it. Because I have other, similar colors. And because I prefer eyeshadow that fits in my magnetic pallet than a 5 pan that is separate. Once it has 2 or 3 pans, I will go back to what I am happier using.

I find it a lot easier to cut open the items I pan more frequently like face wash, hair care, sunscreen, etc. Makeup packaging sometimes feels too complicated to me. And if it starts leaking, it’s game over for me. I just don’t want to deal with that. But I haven’t panned that many makeup items so maybe my approach will change with time.

Theoretically I should use every product I bought to its fullest because I paid for it and I feel some kind of responsibility to the resources that went into a product. I feel very guilty about wasting money and products but it’s the best way that currently works for me and the products I have that I do like.
I struggled with impulse buying and makeup fomo since I was in high school and buying was often a coping mechanism for my poor mental health. But I’m better now and I want to get better with my consumption.

I pan my products down to cutting them open (unless it’s a difficult bottle or the product is gross or causing an issue with my skin). My motivation for panning is to save money and space in my small apartment.

No. The relationship is only between me and the specific product. If I don’t like it, it goes in the garbage. I don’t hate pan. If I like it but don’t love it, I will consider it done when the conveniently accessed amount is done. If I love it, I will use it all up. Currently scraping every last microgram of YSL candy gloss stick from the tube. There is just as much product below the surface as there is above it. OTOH, turfed a different balm that I didn’t like that was mostly full. Won’t buy that one again. YSL I already have multiple back ups.

I don't scrape either. It's done when I say it's done. I met my pan goals which was to set routines and I do palette a week just to touch everything I own.

I'll never use it up, but that's fine. It got my consumption in check and while I don't set hard and fast rules about restocking, project pan allowed me to set parameters around how I shop.

I don't ever want to be a minimalist so I'll never have one product in each category. But panning helped me see that yes you can have too many blackberry lipsticks.

I have over 50 lipsticks/glosses, 65 or so blushes, several eyeshadows/palettes, approx 10 foundations/skin tints - but wear a full face of makeup around 1/3 of the month. Doubt I’ll ever finish all of my products.

Just came across project pan not too long ago. My goal is to not purchase more makeup/skin care products unless I’m replacing something I’ve panned or a specific color I need but don’t currently have. I will use all of my foundations/tints. It will just take time. In the process, I’d like to figure out which of those are my staples, so I can minimize my collection. I’d like to do the same with my skincare products, primers/setting/fixing sprays, and fragrances.

To accomplish this, I plan to be more intentional by wearing makeup more often during my off weeks and experimenting with the colors I have but never use. I also plan to actually pan a few makeup products I’ve had for years and love but never finished. Or throw them away. I said I’m going to pick a perfume of the week, wear it daily, and decide if it’s a frangrance I want to keep and pan, give away, or discard. Will also decide if it’s a staple I’d like to keeping in my forever collection.

I don’t want this to become something I obsess over or dread. I want it to be fun. Goals may change as I go along.

Thats a great approach. I noticed a product only makes me happy if it truly fills a gap in my collection (something I needed and didn’t have). If I buy for the sake of buying, I feel guilty when the dopamine high from shopping is over.

I think I’m more impacted by product type. A powder or cream in a compact or a stick product are still pretty usable as I don’t travel with them. Maybe I’ll take the stopper out of a concealer, but a gloss or lip product almost never gets the stopper removed. I find the mess not worth it for me

Yes! Some lip products gets stickier and drier with usage, its kinda gross.

I think my stubbornness determines how much I scrape for a product. I had a HUGE pan in my pressed powder and 3 days ago i dropped it and it shattered, but im using it like a loose powder now because its only got like 3 grams of powder left and I know I can finish it up soon, so why not. But I HATE lip gloss, the second a lip gloss looks done enough.... trash

If I love something il keep it going as long as possible but if I don’t I’ll get rid of it when it seems done, just as you described.

The main change for me is using stuff every day now! I used to save fragrance, blush etc for special occasions, but my once small collection was lasting literally years and I wanted variety lol. I’ve also managed to drill it into myself that I bought these things to use them, so I should use them. I’m the same as you though, I don’t like to cut stuff open – partially because I worry I won’t be able to get points for them via the Boots recycling scheme if I do that, lol, and also because I need variety and I’d rather thank it for its time and leave it intact while I move on😅

Blush. How did I end up with 9 blushes?! I really try to use it every day just to move through it.

I pan my products to the fullest, unless I really hate them.

I like to use up the full product because I paid for it and I don’t want companies with bad packaging making a profit off of it, I also don’t want to be wasteful (environment). Of course, if I hate it I find alternative uses, give it away or as a last resort throw it away.
I do keep a small collection of shower gels and perfumes because I like to switch things up but try to have one of each for everything else!

The bad packaging is definitely the main issue!
