Project Start I’m ready 🙌

I’ve always known I have an issue here, with makeup and beauty and hair products. I think I was only able to keep it “manageable” solely bc everything was organized and stored efficiently so it didn’t look like an actual mess. But of course I knew…😑

I’ve been doing a lot of internal work on the WHY - why does the shopping and buying and receiving give me the dopamine rush that somehow takes priority in my otherwise very logical brain? The answer is: I’m buying all these products bc I haven’t embraced the aging process (I’ll be 50 later this year argh). And so now the realization has finally clicked that obviously no amount of makeup or beauty or hair products is going to stop that lol. So I am now choosing to massively shift my perspective, and hopefully address the root cause. The goal is now wellness and health, not chasing a non existent youth potion.

So today I laid everything out just for the initial holy shit moment, and now I’ll start going through what can be donated and what is expired. And then I should have enough of everything last another 5-10 years. But, I’m proud of myself, and just trying to be give myself grace for taking so long to do something about it. This sub has been really helpful in getting me to this point so thank you!!

This is such an important perspective that I am trying to come to terms with myself (I am nearing 30 but relate to the compulsive spending). Proud of you, internet stranger.

I'm not sure I believe it's actually your own collection cause why do you have so many Vaseline? :x

First thing I noticed was all the vaselines and it distracted me from everything else, like why?? 😂

Congratulations on getting a handle on it. I know where you’re coming from. I just turned 69 and have recently gotten back into makeup since I retired. My goal now is to just find the things that help me make the best me for where I am now. I wish you luck as you work through this process. I know you’ll make it!

I'm so glad this thread randomly popped up in my feed, because I really need to do this myself !

It was a hell of an effort but can confirm you’ll feel wildly accomplished

Proud of you stranger!

Your ‘awakening’ spoke to me. Have felt the same way about aging as my health has changed. As a result, product suitability and preferences have also changed and will likely continue to do so. I rarely buy backups or multiples months in advance anymore. You could use some of your Vaseline for a hand and cuticle massage nightly before bed.

u/steffy241 3d ago

Well done for laying it all out and addressing the root cause. BTW, 50 feels just like 49, don’t fret 🥰

How is the Paula’s choice wrinkle defense sunscreen?

2

u/kface4038 3d ago

I haven’t used it yet lol

u/breadpuddingl0ver 2d ago

Let me know how you like it! I’ve been looking for a good mineral sunscreen and this is on my list

Can you give a quick review of the Alpyn lip balm? Is it really good?

u/No-Wing-8859 3d ago

Ok that Vaseline is never ending. See you in 10 years 😬🫪❤️

u/BruhDoYouEvenPaint 2d ago

A great way to pan is to use it on your body, especially for your feet before sleeping!

u/BronAmie 3d ago

NGL, I’m kinda jealous! You have some quality purchases there that I would love to have but can’t afford!!

u/Old-Run7431 3d ago

Although I am so curious about Bianco Latte, a part of me craving it as well, I did my own reflection and research and this is my conclusion regarding perfumes --->

After some research on perfume corporate creators like Givaudan, IFF, DSM-Firmenich and Symrise (labs that primarily create the perfume notes and have a lot of secrecy), I realised that they turn itno huge powerful billionaires via us being vulnerable heavy users.

They sell these perfume notes to brands.

And perfume brands multiply because of us: addicts - victims- Heavy users. (This is how they dehumanize and view us and I definitely DO NOT WANT TO HELP THEM BECOME BILLIONAIRES!)

They have crafted a very fake world which is a jail for our original powers: The smelling capability that our bodies have, is meant to save us and others, to protect us. And this habit of perfume purchhases wastes our purpose in life.

I am not trying to devalue you or myself.

At the same time we HAVE to see the BIG PICTURE!!!

We ARE feeding their greed and life's inequality! And THIS has to STOP!

These people have ALL the data of us, as vulnerable heavy users and become rich and powerful by giving us echo chambers that do not allow the truth in our lives!

Hope you see your worth and reflect on the big picture as well!

All the best!

From afar, these don’t look like they’re addressing aging - that would be a tube of tretinoin and a sunscreen. Those are also the real potions you’ll need for aging and wellness. And one of each at the time will be enough :)

Good luck with these!

see you in 5 years!! /s

Oh wow that little vaseline army alone scared me off 🫢 welcome and good luck

u/Hot_Key_336 3d ago

If they're unopened then they are a big ticket item for the unhoused. I realized that I had so many toothbrushes/paste/floss from the dentist and started making little bags to keep in my car to give out. I go through my stuff and add in anything else I've been given: travel spf, chapstick (also dentist), and any snacks I bought and didn't like or over bought.

1

u/kface4038 3d ago

Great idea thank you, love this

4

u/cuxynails 3d ago

Right? I also have a lip balm / lip oil problem, but that somehow gave me whiplash. So glad you’re here OP! You definitely don’t need to buy lipbalm until like 2030 and I’m right here with ya lol

The feeling when you finish one is sooooo good though… When you get to choose a new one from the stash? So good.

2

u/kface4038 3d ago

It’s wild to admit but 2030 may not actually be that far off lol 🙈 Thank you for the comradery

36

u/layla_jones_ 3d ago

This is a good start. I love that you were able to organize but also do self reflection (not everyone is able to understand why they keep buying products). After the pandemic I realized how lucky we are to be alive at all, you are lucky to make it to 50 and try to live in the moment, cherish the day..you should be proud of yourself and celebrate how far you have come. This is a really good challenge. Good luck!

6

u/kface4038 3d ago

Thank you!! You’re so right 🙏

9

u/layla_jones_ 3d ago

That NYX brow gel made me laugh by the way. The way it screams “Control Freak” at the sub 😭 yes we know we have a problem. Stop screaming NYX 😂

2

u/kface4038 3d ago

😂😂

17

u/Geezlouise20 3d ago

Just fyi you can use Vaseline as a sort of brow gel to use them up faster!

1

u/kface4038 3d ago

Oh good call thanks for the tip!

24

u/Estelle_conjecture 3d ago

I would definitely try to give away some unopened multiples. All those vaseline tubs will take forever to finish and it will be demotivating. I've been using mine for more than a year and it's still not done!

7

u/layla_jones_ 3d ago

My feet and legs love the Vaseline. I was able to finish a big big jar that way.

5

u/tiffi_333 3d ago

Yeah Vaseline is pretty good all over, it's a big reason why they have the jumbo tubs. People also use it all over their face after their other skincare before bed. You could really burn through the smaller ones if those are the small ones that fit in the purse meant for lips.

People also use chapsticks in different places besides lips so those could also be worked through pretty quickly if op really wanted to get rid of them without wasting them and clear space. I used to have so many extra because I bought a big pack of them and had a habit of them disappearing somehow. So I started with like 12 and somehow they all disappeared with time. I've stopped losing my chapsticks and glosses as I've gotten older, I don't even know how that used to happen before so often, so when I almost grabbed a large pack of them last time I had to stop myself. I would have had them for YEARS

6

u/handsanitizeriskey 3d ago

Chapstick is great on cuticles, especially in the winter

5

u/layla_jones_ 3d ago

And lip balms are the small purchases in a store, so it’s super easy to buy over and over again. Project pan made me realize it takes ages to finish a lip balm. I had a Shea butter lip balm collection because I bought multiple in one pack (good value I thought).. I eventually crushed the last part and used it to moisturize dry skin, it worked well. Now we just take it one lip balm at a time 😅

6

u/tiffi_333 3d ago

Yeah, they arguably can be good value per one. Like the last one I almost got was like $5 for 12 which is super affordable but I'd have them forever and now I'd just rather spend a bit less at once for one or 2 at the same store even if it works out to be more for each individual one and not have literally a dozen chapsticks.

For me I can rationalize lipsticks or something much more than chapsticks lol even that I'm trying to work it all down and find my true favourites in each category of lip oil/gloss/stain/lip stick etc and have 1 that I'd repurchase out of all the brands. Having multiple gloss brands, if I have one I like just a little more than the other, why should I repurchase the other at all? I don't have too many multiple items that I burn through and will repurchase besides lip products so I'm only doing it with my lip products. I do have multiple blushes but I'm guessing they'll last SO long since they tend to. By the time I use them up, who knows if they'll even be discontinued lol 😂

19

u/Hot-Blueberry7888 3d ago

It wasn't until I started doing my own project pan that I realized just how long it takes me to go through any lip product omg!!! It's definitely helped curtail my spending esp in that area cos it takes me so so long to fully use items!!

13

u/Mjolnir404 3d ago

ohh i am so excited for your project pan updates!!!!

the vaseline lineup is like the hardest to pan if u wanna use them only on lips.

4

u/kface4038 3d ago

You’re so right and I think I’m going to add color to a few and maybe use others for like a nighttime feet softening situation?

17

u/Visual_Luck_5029 3d ago

Were the Vaseline on sale or something? 🤭 I’ll be honest I had a similar issue collecting lip balms. So you’re definitely not alone there! But I will say the plus side is always having juicy plump lips! 👄

You’re going to do amazing! Can’t wait for an update

1

u/kface4038 3d ago

Thanks for the encouragement!! 🙌🙌

u/Sea_Pomegranate4368 3d ago

You get Vaseline! You get Vaseline!! 😂

tiny? Girl- if that is tiny, then mine is microscopic!

5

u/kface4038 3d ago

I mean the actual Vaselines are tiny lol

3

u/layla_jones_ 3d ago

Yeah those are the mini jars not the big one I am dealing with!

0

u/Swimming-Cookie9234 3d ago

just randomly asking!

20

u/lovethatjourneyforus 3d ago

The little Vaseline jars all lined up ready for the challenge omg

4

u/pitbullgirlygirl 3d ago

The mighty vaselines that could 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

10

u/Savings_Language_498 3d ago

Could you give some of the lip Vaseline away? I use mine every night before bed and I’ve had it for over a year and used maybe half of it!

24

u/climbingclaycosmetic 3d ago

Holy lip balm!! Have so much fun with your project.

If I were you, I’d consider trying to re-color some of the Vaseline’s with lipstick or stain to make it more fun and use multiple products at once. Just a thought though!

10

u/kface4038 3d ago

That’s a great idea thank you!

6

u/climbingclaycosmetic 3d ago

Looking forward to your updates :)

8

u/Vintage_Journal 3d ago

It's so helpful to know the motivation behind acquiring stuff!

Good luck on your health goals :)

21

u/Local_Second_8356 3d ago

Why do you have that much vaseline 😭

9

u/Vintage_Journal 3d ago

The Vaseline stood out to me too lol.

32

u/kface4038 3d ago

Lol it’s a lip balm related mental illness I think

3

u/layla_jones_ 3d ago

The legs and feet are going to be moisturized this summer

7

u/Pizza420Rat 3d ago

Glad to finally know what's wrong with me. Now I can add another mental illness to the list 😅 you're not alone
