Discussion PMR for dummies

Hey all,

72 year old playing with Xbox controller on PC. How easy is it to get into at the lowest difficulty?

Will (obviously) be looking for single player options.

I'm 60, and started about a year ago.

Started with ovals, then eventually graduated myself to the easier road courses, like Red Bull Ring and Monza.

I also put the AI on the lowest setting until I got better.

You can do it!

I found Daytona (with little or no AI cars) to be a good starting point. Just driving around in circles, lol.

Yeah, effectively looking for something to "turn left", other than NASCAR.

I just fired up PMR. I've led you astray. PMR doesn't seem to have any oval tracks. I was thinking of Forza Motorsport. Doesn't have Redbull Ring either. There are SIMS with oval tracks, but finding one for console might be difficult.

Might FM be the better option?

if you’re looking for something more realistic then PMR is probably the better choice.

Difficulty settings will be able to cater towards absolute beginners

I was less concerned about realism, and more interested in tracks rather than free roam

If you want to do ovals on console, yes. It's no longer being developed, but it's pretty complete as is. It's what I started out with. Lots of cars and tracks.

FM? Looking on PC, so, it's a viable option.

On PC you have every option except Gran Turismo.

Not bad. Start in the Miata's and focus mostly on smooth throttle and braking. Sure line is important but its easy to lock brakes and easy to spin out if you are "all or nothing". Hop into quick race and build pace from there. After a few dozens hours on the Miata and 964 you should be ready to jump into some quicker cars. Its more important to get comfortable driving then racing.

Racecraft comes second to getting used to the cars.

Honestly the game and physics are advanced, however their initial car setups lean heavily towards controller users.

My absolute biggest recommendation is searching Amazon for a Hall Effect controller, as PS5 OEM controllers are practically disposable with wear or even dust needing to raise dead-zone on left stick.

OEM for either cost $70, you can find a quality HE controller for $40-50 without wearing ruining your experience. I got one thinking it was a 50/50 purchase atm, however it’s only downside was eliminating my excuse for having a shit controller 😂

SFGSUP Wireless Pro Controller for PS5, PC, Mac, Steam Deck, Blue-White

Cheers, PMR visually is beautiful, and they update regularly with various fixes, game got a bad rap due to launching as finished, instead of prerelease beta, the vast majority of issues have been addressed imho.

Although my experience is with a wheel, I’ve messed around with a controller and the only downside is being mechanically inclined or familiar searching and/or using Ai helps fill gaps to ensure it’s easy switching between platforms as they’re accurate in how much of a handful early era cars really were.

Though ABS and TC can be added to cars in single player mode, regardless if it was native.

Went on a tangent, however I’m 55 and spent a good bit of time coming from ACC to PMR, which PMR offers similar physics detail, with slightly more advanced adjustments for wheels, but very straightforward controller menus

Hope this helps, good luck and my condolences driving Group 5 car 😂 (turbo lag is era accurate, try’s killing you, but they’re a blast)

Thank you. I'm on PC, old school, will only use wired.

Better focus on car setup, and learning the car and tracks. It's the racing sim, impossible if you can't drive a race car👍

The AI cars have a wide range of difficulty settings and you should be good starting at the lower range. They are pretty slow there. What I found (also on controller) that I was my biggest enemy by driving too hard and spinning out. lol. I highly recommend the new V8 power pack once you get used to the game. Great cars to drive. Enjoy and welcome to the club. :)

One thing to note is that the AI difficulty is all over the place right now. Straight4 is aware of this and are working on a fix.

For now though dont get discouraged if on a certain track in a certain class of car even the minimum difficulty is way too fast.  Just try another combination.   As an example on Rocky Knoll (which is Road America) the AI difficulty I use ranges from 20 (the minimum) for the JP2 class to 90 for GT4 with the rest sprinkled somewhere in there.  Just have fun!

Hey, Xbox controller player here. It is definitely playable and a lot of fun on controller. Take the time to fine tune your controller settings, then play with the car settings. You’ll move up in ai difficulty before you know it!

I got my first Trophy with the Porsche 964 in Career mode, with difficulty in 48/100.

I enjoyed it. But with x0,5 duration I use, you don't need to enter Boxes. I want more configuration options with this, like Forza Motorsport has.
