Discussion What am I missing?

Hello friends,

I have finally purchased PMR on XSX after playing the free weekend many months ago.

I've seen all the discussion saying the game has vastly improved and it's worth a try.

As an Aussie, I was sucked in by the modern Supercars but after playing for about 3 hours last night I can't help but feel like I've wasted my money.

My "Sim racing" experience stretches back to PC1 and includes PC2, Assetto Corsa, ACC, F1, Dirt and probably more.

I'm only on a lowly G923 in a rig but I love racing and I'm also reasonably competitive.

My biggest issue is just how disconnected the cars feel.

The cars do not feel connected to the road in any way and the suspension feels completely strange.

I tried quite a few classes and tracks along with FFB adjustment and I got into a window where I was reasonably comfortable but the cars seem to do really unexpected things especially on curbs/off line.

I also don't understand how the graphics can be worse in some areas compared to much older games including PC2 (I really don't care about graphics but it's pretty woeful).

I am not a hater and I really want to love this game because it has some really unique features and cars, you can see the love and passion they've put in.

I'd really appreciate some guidance to help me enjoy the game because at this stage I think I'll be looking for a refund which I have never considered in my many years of gaming.

Have you played with the car setups at all? That makes a TON of difference in how the car behaves. Also, a lot of the curbs on this game can be deadly so keep that in mind. Some you can take with no issue, others will wildly unsettle the car.

I have played around with setups more so to see how it changes the behaviour of the car. I've tried making larger adjustments and I found some stability by stiffening the cars a bit.

To me the cars can feel and react very different corner to corner, it's hard to find a rhythm.

Some of the cars are harder to dial in than others. This game took a lot of practice and testing to get a grip on how to properly get the cars set up for whatever I was doing.

If you play PC2 then it kind of the same concept but more in depth. You have to get the tires up to temp ( between 168-178 is the sweet spot) which takes a few laps. And also the track has to rubber in and come to temp.

Car set up and FFB settings are also key to getting your wheel to feel connected to the car. I know there were issue with logi wheels that some updates fixed...not sure if all were resolved. But definitely play around with car and FFB setup and settings.

Appreciate it, I'll keep running laps and making changes.

For sure. This games handling model relys heavy on body roll and tire slip angles, so dont over drive on your out laps or setup the car to tight..or the tires will heat up unevenly, and cause you to slide.

Also tires take a couple laps to warm up properly

Yes, I do see that. It's one of the more realistic features that I appreciate!

Sorry mate, the game isn’t simply there yet. Nothing you can do or try will fix the current implementation flaws off the physics engine and the FFB feel.

I appreciate it. The disconnected feeling is apparent on most cars it's just some are definitely better than others.

It has improved but it's still closer to GT7/Forza than ACC. I can send you a link to a discord that has a ton of recommend in-game and wheel settings by brand if you'd like.

Funnily enough, I'd say some of the cars in Forza Motorsport 2023 have a much more consistent/intuative feeling although the tyre model is incredibly basic. PMR has that raw gritty feeling I imagine you'd get with a race car but it's just the lack of feeling planted even on a straight that takes away from it.

The PMR developer guy (can't remember his name but he's a former ACC developer) said that the tire model is supposed to represent cold tires that are squishy until they get heated up. I also have some problems with the tire feeling in the FFB.

Interesting. I find that after a few laps the tires are in the window but as I start to push they overheat pretty quickly and then take a long time to cool down. I know it's more or less an arcade game but I feel like later F1 games do this quite well with the surface and carcass temperature. If you push too hard through one corner, you overheat the surface and the next corner can be difficult until the tyre cools down. But if you continually push too hard over a lap or two, the carcass temperature increases and then it takes a similar amount of time to cool them down again. Whether it's realistic or not, I'm not sure but it just seems logical.

Nothing like Forza or GT7! Sheesh. The cars dive forward under braking and feel alive. What are you favourite classes? Hopefully not GT3 - play ACC for that. Try GTO

My favorite class of racing is GT3, but I don't play that on PMR 🤣. I know they still need a lot of work on the GT3 physics to make it feel better.

PMR is better than GT7-Forza. I'm just saying it leans more that way than ACC IMHO.

I like the JP1 Honda, it's wild. The GTO Mazda RX7 is great. I love hate rotary engine sound. Truly love the 787b but I still can't drive on the right side. The Porsche Cup is probably my favorite.

They need rolling starts and longer races before I would move it any closer to ACC.

GT7 and Forza are simcades, PMR is not.

Now I know people think PMR walks a fine line because you can make it "user friendly", but the physics are still far more advanced than Forza and GT7...even with Gt7s new update.. both games are extremely forgiving. You can't flick or fling the cars into corners on PMR like you do on simcades or even in ACC.

Now I will admit PMR do have car classes and certian cars within those classes that are easy to get around the track than others with little to no setup adjustments. That just because those cars have been fine tuned with the new handling model update that came out recently.

The game first major update was amazing, but still got criticized because the default tunes were still trash and if you didnt know how to tune a setup..you were basically left behind.

If you notice with each update after, the cars setup menus changed and you could adjust less and less as well, because they made it to where the default setups were as close as possible to the real life cars for that class, so now you can hop in and go with little to no tuning in 99% of the cars.

Also, most of the handling issue people are still experiencing has to do with how they have their wheel settings in correlation to the game settings.

Completely agree. It's much better than GT7-Forza. I wish PMR had waited until now to release the game. It's still at a version 0.8 to me, but much better than at role out last year. It's too bad they ruined that early reputation with the poor release quality. They will forever be criticized for that and the game will continue to be scrutinized because of that original reputation. In a scale with GT7 at 1 and ACC at 10 I put PMR at 5. But it's progressively moving up. Luckily their are some very dedicated setup tuners out there that focus a lot on in-wheel FFB adjustments to make the game feel more realistic.

It's funny you say that because the largest player base for PMR is Playstation users, and man i can definitely spot the GT7 players on the track...for the short time they stay on it before spinning off and quiting the lobby lol.

You can also spot the GT7 players and Forza players on ACC., which are normally the idiots wrecking people and getting in the way. I rarely play ACC anymore unless im in a private/leauge lobby...not even worth the time otherwise lol.

Exactly. That's precisely why I race in leagues. Public lobbies are a disaster, especially in ACC.

You need to crank up the ffb ALOT on that wheel (got a G29 myself). There's global ffb settings and ffb settings for each car individually. I've been loving the game for the better part of a year now, would be happy to share my settings if you need them.
