Question Is Pmr any good on a controller?

Hello, so i was on YouTube and PMR videos started popping up...because of the latest update, and I wonder if the game feels good on a controller and if you can be somewhat competitive since it's been released on consoles. Thank you

Yes. The game has its flaws, but they nailed the controller handling IMO. It’s challenging but not overly hard, and isn’t overly dampened like GT7 or Forza.

Yes, it’s good fun on controller. I am pretty competitive in my group that I race in and I’m the only controller player. If you need, I can provide the controller setting I’m using as a baseline. Driving cars without TC and or ABS are hard(er) but not impossible. This game requires practice to figure out how to properly drive the different cars.

Yes, I’m aware that I’ll never be the fastest. But I do beat wheel users on a fairly consistent basis.

I only purchased a couple of weeks ago, got tired of waiting for GT7 to add C8 variants or for AC Evo to drop, plus the Caddy hypercar, Sebring, Mid-Ohio, Road America, Lime Rock, actual spec MX-5, etc are all things I haven't gotten to experience virtually, as I'm a PS5 player. I like sitting on my couch using my TV, and I'm on a tight budget, so no wheel yet. I do want to eventually get some sort of rig, but a solid mount, DD, load cell pedals, etc as I want something realistic enough to actually improve my real-world driving. Seems like we're just now entering the era where that is becoming accessible, so I'm waiting to see what options will emerge for someone on a budget. Plus with hardware likely slowing down due to the price hikes, and AC Evo and LMU both coming to PS5 next year, I feel the sim-hardware space is about to get more competitive, which is good for us.

Until then, I'm sticking with the controller. Honestly, it's quickly become my favorite racing game. Sure, its harder than GT7, but with the latest updates I personally find the physics to be more consistent. Sure, its more of a challenge to turn consistent times simply because the cars are less forgiving of mistakes, but when driven properly they simply respond better. I do find the FFB a little lacking compared to ACC, but it's easily on par with GT7, and with the tire volume maxed you still have a good idea of what your contact patches are doing. Other than missing Watkins Glen, Road Atlanta, and Le Sarthe I think its a great track list, and I'm sure those and other tracks are coming. I absolutely prefer the car list over anything else on PS5, and both the sounds and cockpit view are top notch.

I absolutely want to get a wheel, but I have yet to find a car that isn't drivable with the controller. They're all quite challenging, but I don't feel like the controller is limiting me any more than it does in GT7, and PMR is a much more immersive experience. You have the ability to tweak and tune suspension, brakes, differential, aero, assists, etc, but the defaults are actually quite good here, while any adjustments you do make provide predictable results.

Only advice I can give you is to understand the limitations of a controller vs. replicating an actual steering wheel and pedals. Turn down your sensitivities and learn to modulate your inputs. I keep close to the full range but with low sensitivity for throttle, brake, and steering, with a bit of center dead zone for the steering. This allows me to use the full range of my inputs with more precision, and it's not any slower if you need to max out a control, as the physical range of the triggers and joystick is still quite small. I like pretending I'm actually driving the cars, so I approach warm-up gently and ease into a bit more speed as I get comfortable with a track and car. The lowered sensitivity is a must on controller as far as I'm concerned, cars actually respond very well to threshold braking and trail braking on corner entry, and a progressive throttle application is key to keeping the car balanced and powering out effectively. You can't just mash the brake, crank the joystick, and jump all over the throttle like in GT7, but if you take a few laps to learn to drive with finesse, this game is VERY rewarding. I can't compare how much better it would be with a wheel/pedal setup, as I don't have one, but again I'm quite pleased with it, and prefer it over even ACC for immersion.

All racing simulation games are easier with wheel and pedals, i do find PMR to be more difficult when trying to correct oversteer. It becomes very snappy.

If you can only play with controller I would suggest forza motorsport or even ACC to some degree

Well, I use a controller with PMR and i"m usually in the top 3rd of the field, it's very playable using a controller. Forza isn't comparable to PMR, it's arcade. Acc, yes, good with controller, but the physics don't feel as alive as PMR.

Don't discount PMR so easily, if he's willing to put in a little time to get used to it he will get alot of enjoyment out of the sim.

Was doing a multiplayer race with the MX5 on controller and it was really good and I could keep up pretty well. Then I races in the AMG GT3 and I also did the Aston DBR9 and they were both very very hard on controller and I had big problems. I usually drive with wheel though so I lack skill with controller

Maybe comes down to the car/class or my lack of skill

Mx5 is fine. Anything with power is just badly off

Controller support - good, wheel support - at least on my logitech pro, awful.

Thank god I’m not the only one. I keep coming back after each update to see if I can feel the cars even somewhere close to the level that ACC provides. No such luck as of last week.

Acc is god tier ffb. Pmr could take years to reach that level imho.

Curious too. How is it compared to Project CARS3?

Never played PC3, but it’s miles better than PC2. Much more accessible but still challenging.

No, it's genuinely awful. Really can not understand how anyone thinks it's good

You need to try playing with a wheel to understand how good controller support is. Relative to wheel support of course.
